PAY FOR POSITION: PSE SALARY SCHEDULE LEVEL 12 - $34.33 Per Governor Inslee''s proclamation, as a condition of employment/upon hire, all employees must be fully vaccinated or request and be approved for a medical/religious exemption/accommodation. GENERAL SUMMARY This position''s responsibilities are to perform maintenance and repair of district vehicles and school buses.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Depending upon the individual assignment, the Mechanic may perform all or a combination of the following: 1. Performs services and repair, which includes preventative maintenance and safety checks on district vehicles. 2. Ability to diagnose and perform the full range of mechanical, structural or electrical repairs on buses and other district vehicles. Which includes, but not limited to repairing diesel and gasoline engines, air and hydraulic brakes, fuel and electrical systems and performs welding as needed. 3. Inspects, repairs and rebuilds components of gasoline and diesel-powered school buses and other district vehicles; repairs exhaust leaks, oil leaks, fuel leaks, and faulty brakes to assure safe transportation of students and staff. 4. Answers telephone and two-way radio to communicate with drivers; answers and routes questions or problems to appropriate staff. Respond to emergencies including vehicle break-downs and collision. 5. Changes tires and a wide variety of other vehicle parts for safe and cost effective vehicle operation. Cuts metal and fabricates parts as needed; removes and installs glass. 6. Use computer systems including engine and transmission interface software. 7. Maintains cleanliness of shop for safety and efficiency. 8. Locks up tools, building and fuel tanks at end of shift for safety. 9. Repairs and replace bus seats to maintain interiors in good condition. 10. Checks and adds oil and other fluids for routine maintenance. 11. Create and complete records accurately in a timely manner. 12. Communicate effectively to end users, peers, leads and administration. 13. Address end users concerns in a clear and appropriate manner.OTHER FUNCTIONS 14. May request materials for the repair of bus/auto fleet; process computerized inventory transactions; generate receipts, material issue records, work orders, inventory adjustments, part number maintenance records, etc. 15. May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines. 16. Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position. 17. Experience and demonstrated as a mechanic in the area of school buses or equivalent. 18. Understand and apply policy, procedure and practice. 19. Performs other duties as assigned.REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Reports to the Director of Transportation or designee. MENTAL DEMANDS Required to remain flexible to changes in assignments or priorities; requires attention to detail and concentration.PHYSICAL DEMANDS Working around and under heavy buses and power machinery requires constant safety awareness; required to lift, move and position heavy objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds; required to stand for prolonged periods; exposed to high noise levels from buses and machinery; required to take precautions to avoid exposure to fumes and chemicals; required to work outdoors in inclement weather on emergency repairs; required to wear protective clothing. Passage of a pre-employment physical is required of this position (the district will assume the cost.)MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, including completion of diesel and auto mechanic apprenticeship. Allowable Substitutions Such alternatives to the above qualifications that the district may find appropriate and acceptable. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively with drivers of vehicles to understand vehicle problems and perform maintenance. Knowledge of diesel and auto mechanics. Skill in troubleshooting vehicle problems. Ability to record parts used on jobs, work orders and inventory withdrawals. Ability to operate valve grinding equipment and all appropriate hand and power tools. Ability to operate two-way radio. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with drivers, other mechanics and district staff. Ability to work independently. Licenses/Special Requirements Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan. Valid Washington state Class B commercial driver''s license with passenger and air brake endorsement. Mandatory drug testing is required. Ability to pass school bus driver''s training course.
