Job Summary:Coordinates the daily unit activities including patient, physician and staff requirements to ensure maximum efficiency, high quality patient outcomes and cooperative work environment of the unit.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Directly manages day to day operations in the operating room (OR) suitePlans assignments of staff; prioritizes and modifies specific OR needs as needed.Assists nurse manager with payroll editing and logs.Provides direct supervision and support to the department staff, manages scheduling, and oversees the orientation of new hires.Demonstrates high degree of independent problem solving. Evaluates and optimizes patient satisfaction and attempts to resolve any conflicts related to surgical procedures.Facilitates patient flow, taking into consideration the patients condition and needs, as well as the current level of activity and staffing in the O.R and block scheduling needs.Supports and develops staff scheduling and modifies as necessary for unplanned events.Monitors and oversees the daily O.R. rooms schedule to achieve safe, efficient and optimal patient and surgical care.Maintain department metrics and audits. Provide monthly updates on department metrics and audits to their corresponding committee or administrator.Reports out safety or metrics at OR and Leadership huddles. Holds staff accountable for practices according to standards/policy.Collaborates effectively with physicians, management staff, and other departments interacting with the operating municates in a respectful manner.Participates and operationalizes Operating Room Procedures/Protocols/Policies and ongoing revisions of policies/procedural guidelines.Anticipates potential problems and demonstrated skills at de-escalation techniques and problem solvingParticipates on perioperative committees to improve, flow, safety and operations. Active member of the Executive Perioperative Committee Provides continuity of care by coordinating flow amongst inpatient/outpatient areas, holding areas, and Post Anesthesia Care Units.Participates in nursing leadership meetings and committees. Support staff attendance at nursing and hospital wide committees to represent the operating room.Ensures Patient Safety Initiative (PSI) protocols are in place and being adhered to by the surgical team inclusive of development. Plan of care based on individual needs.Skills/Knowledge:Assists Operations Manager with staff input for evaluations and competencies.Demonstrates analytical skill in assessing staff competency. Seeks and offers feedback in a collaborative mannerWorks collaboratively with O.R. Educator and Operations Manager to support new and experienced staff training. Analyzes staff strengths & opportunities for growth.Attends workshops/conference to support and develop leadership and new clinical skills.Attends 80% of staff meetings.Works with educator to align training and education on operating room needs.Precepts staff in the charge nurse role. Works at establishing new and innovative ways to grow the charge RN role.Supports and operationalizes scrub tech training with experienced scrub techs to promote surgical safety and excellence.Utilizes nursing process, AORN standards and/or evidence-based research for all aspects of surgical/nursing care in a manner consistent with Bristol Hospital, Bristol Health. Utilizes good nursing judgment and communication techniques to support surgical team. Delegates care specific to the type of procedures performed.Supports staff in evaluating appropriate interventions, outcomes of care and modifying plan of care as necessary.Demonstrates ability to circulate, document, scrub and teach aseptic technique.Acts as a clinical resource.Education/Experience Requirements:Minimum of 4-5 years of Operating Room Experience; inclusive of General Surgery, Orthopedics, Vascular, Ophthalmology, GYN, GU, Plastics preferred.Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut.BSN or willing to work toward BSN.CNOR certification or sit for exam within one year of hire.State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:Current Connecticut licensure as a Registered Nurse. See above for additional certification requirements.Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Healthcare Provider CPR from American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer CPR by American Red Cross or other similar programs deemed appropriate by management.Special Requirements:Excellent interpersonal skills, good writing skills and knowledge of budgetary process.Physical Requirements:On feet for extended periods. Standing, lifting, sitting, reaching.Work Environment:Patient care units.
