Experts in pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, and neonatal and perinatal medicine provide care for thousands of children every year at Children''s Hospital of Michigan, Children''s Hospital of Michigan - Troy and six ambulatory sites.Job Description:Under the direction of the Chief, Pediatric General Surgery, oversees, monitors and trains the ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) Technical Specialist and Senior Respiratory Therapists working in ECMO. Sets up, troubleshoots and monitors patients on prolonged life support. • Develops protocols, policies and procedures for ECMO therapy and evaluates effectiveness. • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Ensures appropriate supply levels. • Collects data for national ECMO registry. Participates in ECMO research and education. • Provides functional guidance, oversight and training to the ECMO Technical Specialist and Senior Respiratory Therapists working in ECMO and ensures round-the-clock ECMO coverage. • Provides training to the ECMO Technical Specialist for setting up and placing patients on ECMO. • Conducts in services with employees to communicate updates and to maintain technical proficiency and knowledge of equipment and procedures. • Evaluates performance of the ECMO Technical Specialist and provides input to the evaluations of Senior Respiratory Therapists working in ECMO. • Prepares the ECMO machine for placing patients on the ECMO process. • Evaluates and selects equipment and supplies to be used to set-up ECMO heart-lung machine. • Primes and safety checks equipment and assists in connecting patient to circuit. • Monitors patients receiving ECMO treatment and the equipment. • Under established ECMO protocol, adjusts rates of blood and gas flow through heart-lung machine based on interpretation of patients vital signs and laboratory results; determines heparin levels in blood by measuring activated clotting times, documents information relative to patient care during ECMO and communicates patient''s condition to physicians and staff. • Continuously monitors and interprets alarms and feedback systems from ECMO circuit to maintain optimal functioning. • Prepares and replaces critical components of the ECMO circuit when equipment malfunction occurs while patient is on ECMO. • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment; maintains and checks, quality assurance and quality control programs. • Ensures a sufficient inventory of ECMO supplies and equipment at all items. • Orders and maintains adequate drug supply for the ECMO circuit. • Develops protocols, policies and procedures for ECMO therapy; evaluates effectiveness of current program; makes recommendations to Chief of Pediatric General Surgery regarding equipment or procedural changes. • Maintains departmental patient records and forwards appropriate information to national registry (i.e., Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO)). • Acts as a resource person to other internal and external hospital personnel regarding ECMO; attends ELSO meetings to update and exchange EMO information; attends meetings and seminars to increase professional knowledge. • Performs ECMO duties of a Senior Respiratory Therapist as needed. Participates in clinical ECMO research; investigates new techniques and drugs to treat patients while on ECMO. • Adheres to hospital and department policies, procedures, and objectives and performs other duties as assigned. • Promotes the value of the DMC by demonstrating behaviors supportive of a commitment to quality, community welfare, respect and involvement, teamwork, open and effective communication, innovation and education, and efficient and effective resource use. Qualifications:1. Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy or Nursing from an accredited program.2. Three to four years progressively more responsible related experience, including one to two years as a Respiratory ECMO Specialist and one year ICU or OR experience.3. Registration by the National Board for Respiratory Care with licensure to practice as a respiratory therapist in the State of Michigan or licensure to practice as a registered nurse and current CHM ECMO certification.
