The Job: Our Houston Ship Engineering - Government Projects Team is looking for a Systems Engineer, Senior to work from our Headquarters Office in Houston, Texas! This person will support U.S. government agencies (US Navy, US Military Sealift Command (MSC), US Coast Guard, MARAD, NOAA, etc.) by performing various classification and certification services for surface vessel marine systems. What You''ll Do: The successful candidate will be integrated into the Ship Engineering Department Government Projects Team overseeing certification activities for both new construction programs and in-service vessels. This Systems Engineer will liaise with Ship Design Managers, System OEMs, Shipyards/System Integrators, and Port Engineers to provide value-added services meeting the unique needs of U.S. government agencies.This is a cross-domain systems role (piping, mechanical, electrical, etc.) that focuses on design for safety considering complex system interoperability and variables impacting system reliability, availability, and maintainability.Other Tasks: Review ship''s system and equipment design drawings, engineering change notices, etc. to verify compliance with rules, standards, and other specification requirements.Support client resolution of deviations including justification for technical determinations Perform work which involves conventional engineering practices including complex problem resolution of conflicting design requirements, material standards or the coordination of activities among other disciplines. Provide technical advice to field operations / surveyors and other technical offices within ABS. Liaise with USCG for technical interpretations, equivalencies, or exemptionsPropose new approaches to problems encountered and make recommendations for changes in rules, methods, procedures, or designs. Draft technical correspondence and other forms of communication for internal and external distribution. May act independently as the responsible engineer-in-charge for large or complex projects. May assume project management responsibility for smaller projects, or for subtasks of larger or complex projects. When not assuming project management responsibility, will take technical direction on a project and assignment-specific basis from their supervisor. May be assigned to several projects concurrently, and on each project, assignment may report for technical direction to a different supervisor. The Senior Engineer position is a professional-level technical position, with limited responsibility for performing management tasks.
