Network Engineer IPalmer,AKWe are searching for an experienced Network Engineer I at our Palmer HQ facility. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Network Engineer I (equivalent to Senior Network Engineer) position will be responsible for engineering planning, design, equipment evaluation, project management, installation specifications, and test& acceptance for MTAs existing and advanced networks to ensure cost effective enhancements and upgrades to meet network requirements. Engineer shall work in close collaboration with Inside Plant Engineering group, Network Planning, Outside Plant Engineering, and Operations. This position will be self-directing, relies on extensive experience to accomplish tasks and a has a wide degree of creativity and latitude. Expectations are to help direct the work of the engineering group and provide guidance to the work groups development. SPECIFIC TASK DESCRIPTION Engineer and implement network enhancements in a cost-effective manner using sound professional business approaches. Perform cost/benefit trade-offs. Provide engineering and technical expertise and support for both internal and external customers. Plan, develop, design, and manage network projects in conjunction with MTAs capital plan and customer demand. Evaluate network security issues when designing network and in conjunction with the Information Security Office recommend and implement changes to minimize network security concerns. Evaluate and recommend new, advanced technologies (both software and hardware platforms) that will be most cost-effective in meeting network service requirements. Maintain inside plant records and drawings for MTAs facilities. Initiate positive interface with all MTA departments to facilitate timely completion of work assignments. Plan overall equipment layouts in central offices and remote facilities. Coordinate growth and maintenance concerns with Buildings Engineering, OSP Engineering, and CO Maintenance. Projects are engineered according to acceptable industry standards. Evaluate demand forecasts, sales and market forecasts, mandates, and technology evolution, and be able to apply these requirements to successful network design. Maintain professional contact with suppliers, vendors, trade organizations and other peer groups to stay current in technology changes and trends affecting the Telecom field. Effectively research and present technical material verbally and in written form to both technical and non-technical audiences. Provide leadership to Network Engineer level II (Junior) and III (entry level) Required Qualifications:Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or combination of Bachelor or Associates Degree in Electronics or related field and current, practical, and applicable technical experience in the Central Office networking portion of the telecom field Active JNCIP-SP certification. If inactive, required within 6 months of hire or equivalent certifications 5+ years experience in network planning, design and implementation can substitute above qualifications Extensive knowledge of routing, switching and firewall systems Advanced technical experience of OSPF, ISIS, BGP and MPLS Technical understanding of Juniper/Ciena hardware and configurations Familiarity of WDM Transport systems Preferred Additional Qualifications (knowledge of/familiarity): MEF standard based service for Layer2 and Layer3 Circuits QoS and Firewall Policy for scalable deployment Access transport and service technology (FTTH, VoIP, Pseudowire T1 and DSL) Segment routing and traffic engineering Application servers (DHCP, DNS, radius, tacacs and LDAP) to support various services AC/DC power systems Python scripting Responsibility: SUPERVISION: None EFFECT OF ERROR: Errors in employee''s normal work activity may put employer at substantial risk. Most errors can be substantially corrected within one year after identification. Correction may require a high level of disruption of normal resource allocations in other departments as well as their own. JOB SCOPE: The individual employee is seen performing a multiplicity of functions or professional procedures which go beyond repetitive operations. The tasks assume a greater complexity; they are likely to require creativity and a demonstration of vocational and/or professional initiative. These activities require a working knowledge of the operations of more than one section within a department. The ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time is essential. INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Job responsibilities are mostly non-routine and may involve issues affecting several MTA departments. Problem solving requires considerable research and analysis. Independent judgments may establish precedent, committing capital and resources within MTA. WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to mildly unpleasant and stressful conditions, usually on an intermittent basis, such as unexpected and limited pressure resulting from lost data in the switching network.
