Job Description

Purpose of ClassificationThe purpose of this classification is to protect lives, prevent accidents, and ensure the safety of swimmers. Employees in this classification provide emergency lifesaving services to swimmers in need and maintain swimming pool and facility.Essential FunctionsMaintains the facility, pool, its supplies, and sports equipment, to include providing customer service and performing routine clerical tasks. Supervises the users of Parks and Recreation aquatic facilities at all times. Ensures/supervises proper use, storage and care of equipment and supplies. Oversees the safety of aquatic users. Reports major problems, concerns and accidents to supervisors and/or site director. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors environment to ensure safety of other employees, patrons, and other individuals. Evaluates the weather conditions for severe storms or lightning for the protection of the patrons of the aquatic facilities. Monitors the conduct and activities of the patrons of aquatic facilities; responds to situations involving disruptive behavior, suspicious behavior, potential medical problems, or other problems; reports problems to appropriate personnel; initiates calls for police, fire, or emergency medical services as needed. Prepares accident reports, discipline reports, attendance reports and evaluation reports to submit to supervisor and/or parents of the children and the patrons of the aquatic facilities. Adheres to aquatic facility rules, regulations and procedures on a daily basis including proper disciplinary procedures; proper use and storage of equipment; the application of first aid and CPR; attendance at any and all lifeguard meetings; proper and accurate use of timecards and reports; and the proper use of forms. Creates an atmosphere of fun, cooperation, fairness and learning for the patrons of the aquatic facilities. Maintains offices, storage areas, pool deck areas, pool walls and floor, pool gutters and associated buildings; scrubs locker room floors; vacuums; paints; cleans restrooms and counters; empties trash and sorts recycling items; stocks supplies; and sweeps floors. Performs other related duties as required. In the event of a declared state of emergency, employees in this classification may be called to work during days or hours other than those for which they are regularly scheduled.Minimum QualificationsMust be 16 years of age and possess and maintain valid certifications in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), Preventing Disease Transmission (PDT), First Aid and Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard Training certification. Water Safety Instructor certification preferred. Fingerprinting required.
