JOB SUMMARY:The Chief Resident in Internal Medicine supports the educational and programmatic objectives of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at MAHEC by facilitating the smooth clinical operations of the practice sites where Internal Medicine residents are deployed.The Chief Resident in Internal Medicine is a unique position that allows a young physician to develop leadership skills and introduces them to academic medicine. Although technically a junior faculty position in the department, the Chief Resident functions as an integral link between faculty and resident physicians, and therefore must maintain good communication channels between both groups. The position allows for the development of administrative skills since the Chief Resident functions as a manager, and for the development of teaching skills in Internal Medicine. Because of the flexibility of this position, the Chief Resident is allowed to grow in many ways, and may choose to pursue independent scientific investigation, formal education in public health or health administration, or to devote additional time to clinical medicine. Above all, the Chief Resident is a role model for resident officers and medical students.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:Administrative Scheduling:In collaboration with the Program Director, development of a yearly schedule for each resident in the department. Scheduling occurs in a dynamic manner throughout the year, accommodating addition to and attrition from programs rotating on Internal Medicine services.Development of monthly call schedules, emergency back-up schedules and all other clinical coverage schedules (assignment schedules, Wellness Reserves, clinic coverage, etc.)Development of weekly schedules of conferences for residents, students, and faculty.With office staff, generates consolidated coverage schedule (i.e. ''monthly block schedule'') for distribution to all nursing stations, telepage, admissions, collateral services, patient ServicesMaintains supervision of ward census, admitting algorithms, and making appropriate adjustments in admission numbers to inpatient services at both the VAMC and Mission conjunction with hospital leadership, facilitates location of ICU and non-ICU beds, progressive care beds, telemetry or other resources when capacity taxed.Ambulatory ServicesManages scheduling issues in the resident Primary Care Clinic (with clinic directors).Assists in coordination of educational activities in ambulatory settings.Provides overall supervision of resident participation in subspecialty clinics.Disciplinary Matters/Conflict Resolution:Handles minor resident disciplinary or professionalism matters. All matters will be discussed with and managed in collaboration with the Program Director, who will involve the Clinical Competency Committee as indicated.Seeks to resolve conflicts between resident in Internal Medicine and other departments, between resident and colleagues in Nursing, Allied Health and Administrative services, and between resident and colleagues at all levels in Internal Medicine.Rotates administrative call with program leadership members The CMR and the program leadership will divide night, weekend and holiday tern recruitmentAssists in development and planning of recruitment activities.Assists in critique and update of website annually, prior to recruiting season.Coordinates and provides tours for intern applicants at MCVH and VAMC.Shares in the coordination and hosting of applicant dinners and lunches.Hosts applicants at conferences and other activities.Depending on program protocols, contacts applicants to address questions and assists with second visits.Serves as interviewer on recruiting days.Participates in the intern selection process.Miscellaneous Duties:Attends weekly meetings with the Program Director as well as a monthly meeting with the Chair and program leadership. Facilitates smooth clinical operations through administrative, educational, and if necessary, disciplinary support.Provides assistance in any clinical capacity necessary to any House Officer, Attending Physician, or student needing acute support.Periodically assists the Department Chair and/or the Program Director and his/her assistants in completion of specific tasks and projects.With respect to resident collectively, to support morale, mission, and departmental policy; and to model congruent behaviors. This includes being visible on the wards and accessible in the Chiefs Office and by health system pager.With respect to house officers individually, to proactively seek to recognize psychosocial difficulties and arrange appropriate support and interventions.To accurately inform and advise the Program Director and his/her Assistants as well as the Department Chair of emerging problems and potential solutions as they relate to resident educational and professional activities.Partners with program coordinator in managing residency program social media accountsPartners with program director/APDs and coordinators in planning annual program events such as transition sessions, retreats, graduation, etc.Monitor clinical and educational work hours at both sitesEducational Attends ALL resident conferences to provide introductions, audiovisual assistance, and record attendance.Coordinates all resident conferences:Assists in educational program development.Facilitates appropriate remedial measures for educational or professional plete evaluations of and give feedback to interns on submitted discharge summaries.Assists in the evaluation of clinical performance of house officers and participate in the Clinical Competence Committee meetings.Participates in the Practice of Clinical Medicine Course as a preceptor.ClinicalInpatient attending - 8 weeks inpatient attending on Inpatient General Medicine Service.Participate in emergency back-up coverage for General Medicine Service at Mission Hospital.Precept weekly in IM resident clinic.This role description is a general description of the essential job functions.
