BASIC FUNCTION AND QUALIFICATIONSCurrent Vacancy is 20hrs a week at Malibu High SchoolBASIC FUNCTION:Under general supervision, prepares chemicals and solutions and sets-up laboratory equipment and apparatus in preparation for student experiments; maintains laboratory supplies and equipment; provides technical guidance to students during experiments; and performs other related work as necessary.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: A high school diploma or recognized equivalent. EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months of experience assisting in a laboratory setting, including preparing solutions and maintaining inventory. The employee works in a laboratory environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and direct exposure to laboratory chemicals, acids, grease, and oils. The position occasionally works outdoors and is occasionally exposed to processed heat in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The employee is provided with safety glasses and an apron for protection. The employee interfaces with the Department Chair, instructors and students in receiving work assignments and setting up and assisting with experiments. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Finger and manual dexterity is needed to manipulate laboratory supplies and equipment. The position frequently carries, pushes, or pulls materials weighing 20 pounds or less and occasionally lifts items weighing up to 50 pounds. The position occasionally climbs stairs and ladders. ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY LIST: This examination process shall be open to all qualified applicants and shall result in one integrated eligibility list. All eligibility lists shall be established in accordance with Personnel Commission rules and shall be established for a period one (1) year, unless otherwise noted, or until there are fewer than three (3) ranks of eligible candidates who are available. Candidates are placed on the eligibility list in rank order according to their final examination score. Final examination scores will not change, but ranking may change as other candidates are added or removed from the list. ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT:Generally, new employees start at the first step on the appointed salary schedule. When filling a permanent vacancy, a new employee may request a higher salary placement based on having training and experience that greatly exceeds the minimum qualifications. An employee may submit a formal request for advanced step consideration on or after the first day of employment.
