Job DescriptionJob Title: Registered Professional NurseDepartment: Operating Room (Surgical Services - Main or Surgicare)Reports To: Supervisor/Manager of OR/ SurgicareJob Summary: The role of the registered nurse in an operating room provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of OR nurses include (but are not limited to):Job Responsibilities:Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.Assesses patient physical condition. Reviews history & physical, vital signs, diagnostic studies, reports any abnormalities. Conducts pre- and post-operative education. Assess knowledge level, ability to understand and coping mechanisms of patient and support system and educate as needed. Identifies, prioritizes and organizes nursing action and activities necessary for the desired outcomes. Coordinates patient care team, use of supplies and equipment for intraoperative care, and controls the environment.Establishes priorities for nursing actions, assigns activities to personnel based on qualifications, and prepares for potential emergencies. Is aware of complications that may require special equipment.Coordinates patient care in the Operating Room according to Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) standards and guidelines.Appropriately utilizes Universal Protocol per Cayuga Medical Center policy.Anticipates needs and provides equipment and supplies based on patient age, health status and proposed procedure. Plans and organizes self to meet patient care requirements and unit needs within shift. Stays beyond as necessary.Demonstrates ability to prioritize needs and care of patient during both scheduled and emergent situations.Demonstrates ability to stay calm, function with purpose and react appropriately in all situationsCommunicates and documents monitoring and physiologic responses to interventions (e.g. Medications, vital signs, LOC, skin color, change in physical status, etc.) to alert surgeon/anesthesiologist of changes that may require medical intervention.Demonstrates effective delegation skills. Completes all mandatory educational requirements and seeks out learning experiences. Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies and correct hand washing/scrubbing technique. Demonstrates adherence to safety policies. Demonstrates quality and effective communication with all team members.Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with other departments (Main Campus or SC, ED, Radiology, ICU, etc).Demonstrates flexibility and accepts change as needed. Remains attentive to detail, record keeping and required documentation inherent to pletes operative record promptly and accurately at the end of each case. Including complete charges with implants and consignment items. Fulfills all full-time or part-time requirements for hours worked for which hired (FT - 37.5, PT - 30.0, etc.)Fulfills all weekday and weekend on call requirements - this applies to FT and PTException is to individuals based at SurgicareOR Nurses can take the role of: Circulating Nurse, with the following additional duties: Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient, provides for accurate care and handling of specimens, Observes and enforces strict standards of asepsis, Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly, Handles patient documentation, Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery.Scrub Nurse, with the following additional duties:Selects and handles instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them to surgeon, General Healthcare Resources, Inventories all items both pre- and post-surgery, maintain standards of care for the operative patient following AORN standards/recommendations.Requirements:Education - Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred. Experience - 1-3 years OR experience preferred. Licensure - Current NYS RN licensePhysical Requirements - Able to lift 20 pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring patients may involve lifting of up to 50 or more pounds. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Indicates Essential functions
