OverviewMusic Therapist- Hospice and Palliative CareFull-TimeThe hospice and home-based palliative care music therapist is responsible for working within their professional scope of practice to assess patients and to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based music therapy interventions that address the psychosocial, developmental, and physiological needs of children and their families receiving care from the hospice and home-based palliative care team. This teams patient population includes patients who are terminally ill and end-of-life, or who are living with life-limiting conditions. The music therapist works with all ages and developmental levels and provides a variety of music interventions that promote coping, joyful family experiences, legacy-making, and self-expression. The music therapist is accomplished in the use of instruments and voice and project-making technology; adapts strategies to a variety of settings; individualizes interventions to meet specific needs; manages and maintains music resources; sometimes supervises students; actively participates in the hospice and palliative interdisciplinary team (IDT); and demonstrates competencies as defined. All of the patient interactions by the hospice and home-based palliative care music therapist and this team occur in the patients home in a nine-county, central Ohio region. ResponsibilitiesPRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Uses music therapeutically within individual and group settings to provide interactions that enhance development, coping, normalization, self-expression, and family bonding. Identifies and modifies treatment based on comprehensive assessment and re-evaluation, with additional consideration for patient/family values and preferences. Advocates, empowers, and supports appropriate parental learning and involvement in their child''s care through music therapy interventions and contributes to a patient''s legacy through music interventions. Demonstrates competent musical skills with guitar, voice, piano, hand percussion, and music technology. Appropriately prioritizes work flow based on patient/family care needs and other responsibilities. Creates documentation which is timely, pertinent, and compliant with department standards. Participates in interdisciplinary treatment planning and co-treatment when appropriate. Coordinates, trains, and supervises students in majors related to departmental programs during field work/internship experiences. Supports patient/family programming that is music focused. Engages in assessing and guiding guest performers and volunteers involved in music events. Identifies and provides music resources and maintains these resources as safe and accessible. Promotes awareness of music therapy at Nationwide Children''s Hospital to patients, families, and staff; including creating and providing educational programs. Remains current in the professional field. Acquires continuing education to increase professional growth and integrates new knowledge and skills into practice. Participates in professional organizations and continuing education initiatives to advance knowledge and skills for self and others. Remains educated on cultural diversity and develops programming and interventions with the patient/family''s unique cultural needs in mind. Is engaged in and supportive of FVS department initiatives and programing.QualificationsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Bachelor''s degree in music therapy and certification by The Certification Board for Music Therapists (MT-BC) required; Master''s degree preferred as well as membership in related professional organizations. Strong knowledge of music relevant to the pediatric population and competence in voice, accompanying instruments, and musical skills such as transposition, improvisation, and song writing. Strong knowledge of child development, developmentally appropriate practices, patient assessment, and the psychosocial impact of hospitalization on children. Ability to adapt interventions for the broad range of medical, developmental, and psychosocial needs of the pediatric hospital population. Commitment to using the latest evidence-based techniques, methods, technology, and programming to meet patient/family needs. Knowledge of research design and methodology. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills Experience related to program planning, teaching, and management desired. Prior experience in a pediatric health care setting desired.
