Job Description

Overview The Institute for Defense Analyses is a federally funded research and development center supporting the Department of Defense and other federal agencies that require rigorous and objective analysis of national security issues. The Joint Advanced Warfighting Division (JAWD) has an immediate need for an Adjunct Research Analyst focusing on Women, Peace, & Security. JAWD provides research and analysis support to improve military capabilities, develop and discover new & innovative approaches and address new and emerging military challenges. The Division''s primary sponsors are the DoD and US national security organizations supporting the operating forces as well as those charged with supporting Security Cooperation/Assistance and Defense Institution Building with selected allies and partners. Research activities revolve around five major themes: military experimentation and wargaming, the development of insights through historical and operational lessons, the application of a wide range of Red Team approaches to emerging challenges, exploring future technological and conceptual change (horizon scanning), and building allied and partner relationships and capabilities to serve shared defense interests through better defense management and planning. Responsibilities Research Analysts at IDA are career research staff, typically with PhDs or with extensive practical or research experience. Research Analysts engage with senior government officials to develop research programs on operational, policy, budgetary, and program choices. This position requires expertise in gender analysis and the integration of women into partner militaries. Some tasks will be narrowly focused, while others will address a broader spectrum of concerns. After defining a research question, Research Analysts: * Develop and implement research plans that address gender in the force, as well as operational and force planning, force design and development, military logistics and general defense analysis. * Select appropriate methodologies and analytic tools for research, both quantitative and qualitative. * Implement and apply software appropriate to the research problem * Interact with government officials, military personnel, and other subject matter experts during the research process and in communicating research results. * Develop and present analytic products and results for both general and technical audiences in the form of papers, reports, and briefings. * Develop and lead research projects that address the greatest challenges confronting national security. Qualifications Research Analysts are expected to demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills, a capacity for independent thought, and sound judgment. Candidates will need to exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to contribute effectively to a team approach to problem solving. They should be familiar with modern computer applications appropriate to the individual''s academic discipline. Successful candidates will have: * At minimum, requires BS+10 years of experience or MS+8 years of experience or Ph.D. in a discipline appropriate for the position. * Demonstrated research excellence and a strong interest in applied research. * Demonstrated the ability to present technical information to technical and non-technical audiences. * Proven ability to analyze and integrate data and model outputs to develop strategic and actionable insights. * Knowledge of the Department of Defense, military operations, and related subjects of analysis is desired. * Experience with security cooperation authorities. * Experience with gender analysis and women in the military.
