Job Description

I. Basic Purpose: The Endoscopy Technician provides technical support to the Endo patient, Registered Nurse, and Gastroenterologist during procedures carried out in the Endoscopy and Outpatient Department. The Endoscopy Technician performs under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse assigned to the Endo room. II. Major Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Complies with established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance methods, and safety codes. Demonstrates compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agency provisions as required. 2. Consistently demonstrates appropriate and professional communication behavior toward patients, customers, and coworkers. Cooperates with Management and peers to promote an environment of teamwork and collaboration. 3. Prepares and turns over Endo room in an organized and efficient manner. 4. Cleans and high level disinfects endoscopes according to hospital procedures. 5. Transfers patients as necessary, using proper body mechanics. 6. Assists physicians during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on patients in the Endoscopy suite, patient''s room, surgery, surgical outpatients, and x-ray departments. 7. Demonstrates expertise in necessary technical skills: application of abdominal pressure; patient positioning techniques; manipulation of polyp snares; manipulation of hot and cold biopsy forceps; handling of esophageal and colonic dilators; PEG tube insertion; ESU; EKG; and use of equipment such as basket extractors, toothed forceps, etc. 8. Demonstrates ability to maintain all endoscopy equipment and supplies. 9. Ability to properly operate and maintain endo stretchers. 10. Performs and records vital signs, collects specimens as directed, and documents components of care. 11. Labels and documents tests according to hospital policy. 12. Maintains confidentiality of patient and unit care data. 13. Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings. 14. Maintains annual mandatory education requirements specific to position as mandated by Martin Health System. 15. Performs all other duties as assigned or requested. III. Minimum Requirements (experience, training, and education): To effectively fulfill this position, candidate must meet the following requirements: > Must have a minimum of one year experience as a patient care technician or nursing assistant in an acute care setting. > Current acceptable CPR certification required: American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider OR American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer OR American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. Must be able to demonstrate competency according to MHS PCT training competency program.
