MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES List most important duties first 1. Diagnoses vehicle repair needs using engine analyzers and other automotive diagnostic equipment. Operates all district vehicles to include but not limited to: buses, light fleet vehicles and all industrial equipment including bull dozers, road graders, boom and bucket trucks, forklifts, backhoes, bobcats, trailers, generators, and air compressors. Performs '' Bumper to Bumper'' repairs on all District vehicles Follows all HISD safety policies and procedures. Reads, interprets, Electronic Vehicle Inspection Reports ( EVIR ). 2. Repairs and/or replaces brakes, engines, transmissions, clutches, rear axle assemblies, suspension and steering components, radiators, air conditioners, fuel pumps, exhaust systems, vehicle electrical systems, and other components on gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. 3. Dispatches service calls to include tire truck, service truck and wrecker (heavy and light Tow Truck operation) as required to perform maintenance work on road service calls including prompt, courteous and efficient emergency road service to HISD disabled vehicles. 4. Performs automotive, sheet metal, body repairs, interior upholstering and replacing glass. Performs carpentry repairs on heavy equipment trailers and buses. Welds, burns, fabricates and repairs equipment. Performs engine rebuilds and diesel fuel system diagnosis. 5. Operates diagnostic equipment such as Scan tools, Computers based Reference Materials disc and drum brake lathes, front end alignment machines, tire mounting equipment, A/C recovery system, overhead cranes, and pressure washers. 6. Operates service vehicles to include tire truck, service truck and heavy wrecker as required. Performs maintenance work on road service calls including general towing, extrication, recoveries, accidents, jump starting batteries, changing flat tires, fuel delivery, and general trouble-shooting of disabled vehicles. 7. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. EDUCATION High School Diploma or GED Trade school or Community College certificate preferred WORK EXPERIENCE 3 to 5 years of experience or 2 years of experience and completion of a 2 year Trade/Tech school/ Community College certificate program. TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION Office equipment (e.g. copier), Hand tools, Power tools, and all district Vehicles Must be computer literate and able to navigate Outlook and a web browser without assistance. Must obtain a Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement within 90 days from time of hire and maintain throughout the length of employment. A/C Recovery Certification is required within 90 days from time of hire. ASE Certification or equivalent Manufacturers/TASBT Certification preferred Current ASE /TASBT or Manufacturers Master Technician Certification preferred LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff. WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied. Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an ''as needed'' basis. BUDGET AUTHORITY No budget development activity is required. PROBLEM SOLVING Decisions are made on routine matters affecting few individuals and usually within the confines of the job''s own department. Specific job activities and results are typically reviewed closely. There are limited requirements for developing new ideas or changes in methods, procedures or services. IMPACT OF DECISIONS Decisions have , major and possibly incremental impact on the department or facility. Errors are usually discovered in succeeding operations where most of the work is verified or checked and is normally confined to a single department or phase of the organizational activities resulting in brief inconvenience. COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and coworkers in own and other departments. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS Follows through with customer inquiries, requests and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution. WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noise, chemicals, etc. Ability to carry and/or lift 45 pounds or more.
