Position Summary Responsible for designing, developing, integrating and evaluating products and services within the scope of DIHI projects. This position will act as a liaison between product managers, data scientists, data engineers, and clinician users to determine the requirements for novel technologies and care delivery models. This position will work directly with clinical front-line workers and operational stakeholders to deeply understand problems prioritized as DIHI projects and co-design and co-develop solutions with diverse stakeholders. This position will collaborate closely with technical and clinical DIHI and project team members to ensure that novel technologies and care delivery models are effectively integrated into clinical care and address core problems. This position will work closely with the DIHI Program Director to identify and pursue opportunities to leverage emerging technologies and care models to drive impact within Duke Health. This role will participate in activities throughout the product lifecycle, including initial design, development, internal and external validation, temporal and clinical validation, impact and outcomes analyses, and operationalization. This role will draw upon firsthand clinical experience, clinical research expertise, and data science expertise to design and develop new technology-enabled care delivery models and measure the impact of innovations integrated into clinical care. This role will engage diverse stakeholder groups to gather feedback throughout the product development and implementation process to ensure that barriers and facilitators are surfaced and addressed through effective analysis, communication, and change management. Lastly, this position will help teach students and trainees involve in DIHI workforce development programs. This position will possess expertise in the practice of medicine, data science and machine learning, and clinical research to effectively develop solutions to problems faced by Duke Health patients and clinicians. This role will work closely with business unit leaders and compliance and regulatory support staff, and success carrying out responsibilities will be strengthened by strong interest in business, ethics, law, and policy. This position will maintain comprehensive and contemporary knowledge of clinical research, data science, and machine learning, with a focus on development and validation of products and services in the health setting. The Machine Learning Research Scientist reports directly to the DIHI Program Director. Duties and Responsibilities of Position: Development, validation, and implementation of novel technology or workflow solutions Works directly with product manager, clinical end-users, operational stakeholders, and business unit leaders to gather requirements and co-design and co-develop prototypes of solution to ensure that novel product or service addresses core problems Performs interviews and observations of clinical and operational stakeholders to thoroughly understand clinical and operational problems to help frame and scope technology and workflow development Collaborates directly with data science lead, quantitative science trainees, and clinical trainees to develop and validate data science and machine learning technologies for DIHI projects Develops utilities and frameworks to standardize and enhance the development and validation of products and services Leverages clinical expertise to validate input data elements, outcome definitions, and perform data quality assurance to ensure that data are fit-for-use in downstream analyses and model development efforts Develops and optimizes existing frameworks to process and transform raw clinical and operational data for use in algorithms and workflows Reviews data and code and performs evaluations of previously built products and services before projects progress with integration into clinical workflow Maintains contemporary knowledge of advances in data science and machine learning to ensure that emerging technologies are incorporated into DIHI development efforts Design and execution of evaluations to assess clinical and operational impact of novel solutions Works with clinical and operational leaders to define relevant outcome measures to demonstrate impact of product or service integrated into clinical care Designs and conducts evaluations of solutions to identify strengths and weaknesses of innovations and improve practices across DIHI Collaborates directly with data engineering and solution architect team members to optimize technology infrastructure for rapid implementation and evaluation of novel technology solutions and care delivery models Defines performance and impact measures related to safety, efficacy, equity, and fairness to monitor and measure throughout the product lifecycle as well as standard reporting practices to diverse stakeholders Identifies opportunities to enhance implementation and maintenance of technology and workflow solutions, including automated reporting and notification to detect changes in care delivery or unanticipated adverse events Stakeholder engagement and requirements gathering Works directly with clinical and operational stakeholders to identify requirements, map clinical and operational workflows to identify opportunities for new technologies and workflows, and prototype solutions Maintains internal and external network to identify opportunities to leverage emerging technologies and approaches to benefit DIHI projects and improve clinical care at Duke Health Engages diverse stakeholders in design, validation, and evaluation of technology and workflow solutions to build trust and accountability in products and services that are built for integration into clinical practice Diffusion and dissemination of products and services Works directly with DIHI Program Director to identify opportunities to externally validate, diffuse, and commercialize products and services Participates in dissemination efforts via academic writing, conference presentations, and internal and external communications related to DIHI projects The position assists and leads in performing the following functions: Develops, evaluates, and implements novel technology or workflow solutions built for DIHI projects Designs and executes evaluations of novel solutions to assess clinical and operational impact Engages diverse stakeholders in requirements gathering, technology and workflow design, development, and validation to build trust and accountability throughout product development lifecycle Assists with the diffusion and dissemination of technology and workflow solutions within and beyond Duke Health Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong background in clinical medicine with experience providing care to patients across clinical settings Strong background in data science and statistics with experience developing, evaluating, and implementing machine learning models Strong background in clinical research with experience conducting observational studies and working with causal inference methods Background in software development with experience in back-end and front-end development a plus Strong background in Python programming Strong background in data management working with relational databases and SQL Prior experience with clinical, EHR and/or administrative health data required Experience working closely with clinicians and researchers across biomedical research disciplines developing technologies for use in clinical care Experience working closely with software engineers and statisticians to develop machine learning algorithms for integration into operational IT systems Excellent analytical and problem-solving ability Healthcare/Research industry experience required Documenting and analyzing workflow and clinical processes Creating data solutions to support business processes 6+ years of experience in clinical care, clinical research, and data science technology development and evaluation in health care industry Minimum Requirements: Education: Medical Doctorate or equivalent clinical training required. Candidates with advanced practice provider training and two years of full-time relevant work experience will be considered. Experience: Preferred Experience: Position requires six years related experience. A Doctorate degree can substitute for four years of experience.
