POSITION SUMMARY: The Staff Physical Therapist is responsible for patient evaluation and administration of treatment procedures as prescribed by the attending physician as well as contributing to departmental advancement and development through continuous quality improvement, in service presentations and constructive suggestions. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES Demonstrates professional evaluation skills through use of standardized and non-standardized assessment tools, observation, and obtaining pertinent information from various sources. Performs evaluations in a professional accurate manner for patients of all ages newborn, infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, teenager and young adult. Gathers pertinent information from appropriate sources including medical chart, parents, patient, other allied health professionals, school, etc., to complete the evaluation. Selects appropriate evaluation tools, tests and measurements as determined by the patients age (newborn, infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, teenager, and young adult), diagnosis, developmental level and purpose of evaluation. Competently administers and reports standardized and non-standardized assessments according to test guidelines. Results are documented in evaluation and as indicated in the progress note. Establishes realistic and appropriate short and long-term goals stated in behavioral and measurable terms. Goals are based on the results of the evaluation and patient/ family goals and expressed consistent with the World Health Organizations International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. Reevaluates patients according to departmental standards as well as Louisiana State Board of Physical Therapy and APTA guidelines. . Effectively plans and documents treatment based on the short and long term goals. Addresses status towards goals weekly in progress note for inpatients and at reassessments in outpatient. Structures the treatment session according to the patients age, diagnosis, needs, cooperation level, and parental involvement including physical environment, verbal reinforcement/instruction and behavior modification as needed. Demonstrates proficiency in various treatment techniques including but not limited to neurodevelopmental, ambulation, balance activities, therapeutic exercise, burn/wound care and modalities. Adjusts treatment according to precautions/contraindications. Revises treatment program as indicated based on assessment of patients response to treatment, progress, and familys needs. Recommends and secures appropriate equipment for newborn, infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, teenager, and young adult. Includes seating system, orthotics, prosthetics, splints, ambulation aids, positioning devices and assistive devices. Coordinates schedule with patient, parent, and other health professionals. Plans for patients discharge with regard to patient/parent training, ordering equipment, arranging follow-up and preparing home program. Adjusts schedule according to changes in census, department staffing patterns, and level of patient intensity and department needs. Counsels outpatients as appropriate to facilitate maximum attendance. Demonstrates professional documentation skills. Demonstrates professional characteristics with regard to departmental requirements/ development, communication and self-development. Departmental requirements Provides effective student supervision by recognizing the students strengths and weaknesses, planning their clinical experience according to their needs and providing the student with timely and accurate feedback. Presents at least one in-service per year, formally or informally, providing information obtained in continuing education classes. Use of handouts or audiovisual aides is optional. Meets departmental productivity standards by scheduling at least 7 hours of patient care activities per eight-hour day Meets departmental productivity standards by providing at least 5 hours of patient care activities per eight-hour day Professional self-development Seeks assistance in areas of weakness and incorporates suggestions/guidance into work setting as evidenced by improved performance/skills. JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education/License : BS, MS, or DPT degree graduate of CAPTE approved school of physical therapy. Licensed to practice physical therapy in State of Louisiana. BLS Healthcare Provider Certification from the American Heart Association. Experience: Experience with therapy in pediatric population. Skills: All modalities and equipment available in the Physical Therapy Department, including but not limited to: hot packs, cold packs, paraffin, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, electric and manual wheelchairs, gait equipment, tilt tables, cast saw, goniometer, small tools for fabrication of adaptive equipment and orthotics, and computers as appropriate. Must maintain current CPR certification. The employee will work with all patients requiring physical therapy including but not limited to burns and other wounds, orthopedics, rheumatology, hematology/oncology, congenital and acquired disabilities, neurologic insults and trauma. This includes patients in the following age categories: newborn, infant, toddler, preschool, school age, teenager or young adult.
