Job DescriptionObjective: The ''GDU Lead'' owns every detail that affects the gilt from the day she walks off the trailer into quarantine until the day a catheter is inserted.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS1. Overall management of GDU including but not limited to:Maximize Feed Intakei. Feeder management -- daily adjustmentsii. Feed ration managementiii. Water -- flow and availabilityiv. Minimize stress eventsVentilation Managementi. Controller knowledgeii. Air -- flow, speed, and exchangeiii. Set temp vs. actualiv. Environment assessment - laying patterns, humidity, cleanlinessHealth Managementi. Medication/vaccination scheduleii. Treatment identificationiii. Threshold communicationOverall Flow Managementi. Nursery managementii. Stocking density/square footageiii. Replacement rate, selection rate and timingiv. Weekly targets -- mortality, removals, HNSInventory and Record Keepingi. Gilt Entry Protocol -- ear tagging and recording within 7 days of arrivalii. Daily movements into gestation barn, HNS events, mortality and cullsiii. Weekly inventory trackingGDU Snapshoti. Boar exposure managementii. Heat detectionMARGINAL FUNCTIONS1. Depending on layout/size of farm -- may cross over time/labor in gestation barn or other areas of the farm.POSITION SPECIFICATIONSEducation: Agriculture Degree or equivalent experienceExperience: 2 yearsTraining: Safety Orientation VideoWork Environment: Agricultural swine environment in rural areaNoise levels that require hearing protection in some areasGestation, farrowing, and small swine care processesPhysical Requirements: Standing, walking and ability to be on feet 8 to 10 hours per dayFrequent bending, reaching, squatting and kneelingFrequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp or pullFrequent lifting of objects weighing 3-20 poundsOccasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or requiring up to 50 pounds of force to moveOccasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds or requiring up to 100 pounds of force to move with the assistance of another person as neededAbility to communicate effectively both verbally and in writingAbility to attend and participate in meetings of various lengthsAdditional Requirements: Must live no farther than 30 minutes driving distance from farm being managedMust be able to work every third weekendMust have valid driver''s license and reliable transportation to get to work and attend meetings
