Job Description

Position: Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist Location: Waltham, Massachusetts A123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets. Position Overview The primary focus of this position is ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and municipal EHS regulatory requirements for manufacturing and Research & Development (R&D) operations. This position reports within the R&D department. The EHS Specialist is expected to own the development and implementation of EHS programs (see detail below), as well as providing guidance related to employee health and safety to other entities within A123 Systems Waltham. Primary responsibilities Creation of new, or updating of, existing EHS training programs Development and maintenance of a training matrix for all employees Conduct employee training as required by regulations, procedures and best practices Ensure regulatory compliance with regards to storage and disposal of hazardous materials and hazardous waste Participate in regular safety audits and assist in the preparation of reports of findings along with recommendations for corrective actions Work closely with engineering and facilities teams to develop lockout/tagout procedures for servicing and maintenance of equipment Develop, maintain and continuously improve safety and environmental programs, especially training, to ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, EPA and Mass DEP requirements Complete annual reports, filings, and other documentation as required by state, federal, and local government agencies to maintain compliance Investigation of accidents and incidents to determine cause and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences Working with vendors / consultants to gain products and services to support EHS goals Management of the respiratory protection program including training, fit testing and ongoing monitoring And any additional tasks assigned by the R&D Ops Director; Additional work may include but is not limited to: Monitoring for noise levels, hazardous chemicals, electrical safety, etc., to ensure worker safety and compliance with industrial hygiene and safety regulations Assist in the implementation of emergency response plans, including evacuation plans, fire prevention plans and spill control plans Participate on the emergency response teams Participate-in job hazard analyses for R&D and manufacturing operations Secondary Responsibilities Manage purchasing of general laboratory consumables, ensuring adequate quantities are maintained at all times Promote good housekeeping habits along with overseeing and maintaining a neat, organized and safe environment for all Confirm safe storage and proper labeling of chemicals, consumables, and other items present in the designated laboratory on a frequent basis Assist in establishing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for activities occurring within the designated laboratory Act as the primary contact for questions of safety, procedures and work practices Education/Experience B.S. in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene or related field with 2-4 years of experience in safety, preferably within a manufacturing and/or R&D environment; high emotional maturity and ambiguity tolerance expected A high degree of computer literacy: must be able to generate high quality: training or reporting presentations (Power Point) reports (Word), and spreadsheets (Excel) using Microsoft Office Products Strong knowledge of Massachusetts and Federal hazardous waste regulations and experience managing waste streams and vendors within the state of Massachusetts Desirable experience includes: Outstanding organizational, communication, and training skills Industrial hygiene and industrial safety training experience Experience with mechano-electrical safety, particularly lockout/tagout Familiarity with R&D laboratory as well as battery manufacturing and production facility practices, is a plus
