A123 Systems in Waltham, MA is hiring a Manufacturing Process Development Engineer. The Manufacturing Process Development Engineer will work as part of a team to develop processes for the production of next-generation battery technologies, including all solid-state battery (ASSB) electrodes and cells. The candidate shall have experience developing and deploying manufacturing equipment and processes in order to solve process scale-up challenges. Experience developing scalable processes for battery technologies including lithium iron phosphate (LFP), nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cell chemistries is advantageous while work with silicon and lithium metal anodes is a plus. Duties include ASSB electrodes manufacturing process development, cell scale- up manufacturability development, design and execution of cell builds and analysis/ interpretation of device performance relative to specifications. The candidate shall be able to demonstrate competency in the laboratory, including basic equipment and process design, analytical skills and cell characterization methods. Additionally, the candidate should understand design robustness and be able to design and conduct experiments to optimize manufacturing equipment parameters to drive cell performance improvements. The preferred candidate shall have a BS or MS degree with pilot or large-scale lithium-ion battery manufacturing experience. Experience in the automotive industry is a plus. This position will report to Manager, Engineering and Operations. Primary Responsibilities: Cross-functional work with the R & D and Operations teams for next generation high energy density cell manufacturing technologies, including solid state batteries. Responsible for identifying and developing manufacturing processes including evaluation of compatibility of processes with novel materials. Acquire and evaluate cell data to determine direct and interaction effects of new processes with materials and cell components under test. Planning and execution of root-cause analysis of process- based failures and implementation of incremental improvement over the course of development Improve cell performance, quality, abuse tolerance, and cost using Design of Experiments and other advanced experimental methods. Assist with engineering-level test builds together with Quality and Operations personnel in order to resolve manufacturing process issues. Collaborate with Supplier Quality team in their communication with material suppliers, related to the development and validation of detailed specifications for new materials, and the resolution of any quality issues. Effectively communicate results to broader teams in the US and abroad Understand and adhere to program timelines. Specific Skills/ Abilities: A self-starting, highly organized approach with the capability to identify opportunities and follow through on project goals. Experience conceiving, developing and deploying scalable manufacturing processes. Experience in development of products for large volume production Excellent data collection, analytical and statistical interpretation capabilities An understanding of cell characterization techniques such as impedance, cycle life and abuse testing Exposure to developing technical specifications for materials, components, and assemblies. Exposure to structured development tools such as DFSS or APQP methods Individual drive and flexibility to work in a rapidly developing entrepreneurial environment. Resourceful, organized, with strong attention to detail and excellent interaction skills, capable of rapidly integrating observations and results into subsequent development activities. Education/ Experience: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field, Ph.D. degree is a plus. Experience in development of processes for the production of lithium-ion batteries or electrochemical devices At least 1 years related experienced in a cell product development (cell design, cell validation and/or materials development) environment. Experience with solid state battery technologies is a plus. Familiarity with statistical analysis and Design of Experiments (Minitab) preferred.
