Expectation of Transportation Mechanic A school transportation mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on school buses and other transportation vehicles within a school district, ensuring their safe operation by maintaining mechanical components like engines, brakes, electrical systems, and body parts, while adhering to state and federal inspection regulations. Transportation Mechanic Responsibilities * Preventative maintenance: Regularly inspecting and servicing buses, including oil changes, tire pressure checks, fluid level monitoring, and component lubrication. * Diagnostic repairs: Identifying and troubleshooting mechanical issues using diagnostic tools, including engine problems, electrical faults, brake malfunctions, and suspension concerns. * Component repairs: Replacing worn or damaged parts like belts, hoses, filters, batteries, lights, and windshield wipers. * Body repairs: Addressing minor body damage, including dents, scratches, and panel replacements * Compliance checks: Ensuring buses meet all state and federal safety standards for operation, including DOT inspections * Record keeping: Maintaining detailed repair logs and documentation for each vehicle * Emergency roadside assistance: Responding to breakdowns on the road to provide necessary repairs or arrange towing services * Communication with drivers: Addressing concerns reported by bus drivers regarding vehicle performance Note: The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Strong mechanical aptitude with expertise in diesel and gasoline engine systems * Familiarity with automotive electrical systems and diagnostics * Understanding of hydraulic and air brake systems * Ability to read and interpret repair manuals * Proficiency with hand tools and specialized automotive equipment * Valid driver's license and CDL (Commercial Driver's License) may be required * Knowledge of DOT regulations regarding school bus maintenance Work environment: * Primarily based in a school district's transportation maintenance facility * May require working outdoors in various weather conditions * May involve lifting heavy objects and working in tight spaces Terms of Employment: 12 calendar months FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
