Transportation Equipment Operator - Landscaping

The Transportation Equipment Operator - Landscaping position will operate various types of heavy equipment to haul grounds maintenance equipment, staff, and supplies to job sites; properly maintain grounds including trees and shrubs by mowing, vacuuming, fertilizing, trimming, pruning, etc., including medians along major thoroughfares and I-440; operating a dump truck with a walk-behind leaf machine attachment during leaf collection; operating a dump truck with snow removal equipment during inclement weather; performing regular service and maintenance on grounds equipment; assisting other maintenance personnel with completion of assigned duties; completing and maintaining required records and reports; other street maintenance related duties may be assigned. About You:  The ideal candidate has experience in construction methods and materials, basic construction safety, and is capable of leading by example and earning the respect of coworkers. As you learn and develop in this role, you will be responsible for operating a range of haul vehicles, including flat bed and dump trucks. Your expertise will eventually extend to special function equipment, such as walk-behind leaf collection trucks, and snow and ice removal equipment. The ideal candidate will lead by example and utilize manual and power tools to execute tasks and contribute to general street maintenance activities. About Us: Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curbs and gutter, asphalt, and storm drains. As a member of our 218 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets. The Transportation Landscape Maintenance Unit is responsible for maintaining medians and rights-of-way throughout the City by trimming trees, bushes, and grass, and by planting various trees and plants each season. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. * Operating various types of heavy equipment * Performing unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance  * Selecting proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks * Performing work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations * Performing landscaping maintenance * Operating automated or walk behind leaf machine for leaf collection * Inspecting and maintaining tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment  * Inspecting facilities and structures; identifying and documenting required repairs Education and Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; Less than 1 year experience in light to medium construction equipment operation or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted Licenses and Certifications: * Valid North Carolina Class C driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire * Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial driver's license with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire Preferred Qualifications: * Work Zone certification * Tanker Endorsement Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Standard practices, methods, and materials of assigned work * Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices * Uses and properties of supplies and equipment * Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations * Following directions and meeting standards * Providing attention to detail in assignments * Comprehending reference books and manuals * Operating assigned tools and equipment ADA and Other Requirements: Work Environment and Physical Effort: Very Heavy: Exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), at a construction site and in and around vehicles.?Employees may occasionally be in confined spaces, and warehouse or shop environments.? Work Exposures: There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles and loud noises.
