In this role, you’ll deliver actionable deep insights to solve critical business challenges. The role will initially entail foundational work to help mature the data ecosystem and tooling. Over time, you’ll transition into more advanced data science work, such as predictive modeling and machine learning, to unlock even greater value. You’ll be the first member of the team to invest heavily in AI and machine learning and help us build out the infrastructure and practice. As a leader on the team, you’ll mentor colleagues, set best practices, and elevate how we use data to drive success. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact while growing in a collaborative and innovative environment.What You'll DoLead end-to-end data science and AI projects from problem definition and data collection to model deployment and business implementationDesign, develop, and optimize machine learning and generative AI models to solve complex business problems and drive measurable outcomesIntegrate AI capabilities into existing products and workflows to enhance functionality and create new value opportunitiesCollaborate with engineering, product, and business teams to identify opportunities where data science and advanced AI can create significant impactCommunicate insights and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders through compelling visualizations and presentationsMentor junior team members and establish best practices for the team's AI approaches and methodologiesWhat We're Looking ForMaster's or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative fieldSignificant professional experience in a related technical or e-commerce field, applying data science and AI techniques to solve diverse business problems - Most Staff level folks at Fastly have at least 7 years of related experience.Demonstrated expertise building tools to support complex and highly impactful quantitative analysis of broad operational business questions.Demonstrated experience as a technical leader - leading full lifecycle initiatives, driving long term roadmaps, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders, influencing best practices, mentoring team members, etc.Strong programming skills in Python and experience with data science and AI libraries (PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, Hugging Face)Expertise in statistical analysis, machine learning algorithms, experimentation methodologies, large language models, and generative AI frameworksExperience working with modern data stacks, including Airflow, Fivetran, dbt, BigQuery, Vertex AI, and LookerExperience mentoring and leading others in data science skills and initiativesWe’ll be super impressed if you have experience in one or more of these:Related CDN industry experienceExperience in small to mid-size organizations where you have hands on experience and decision making input on building and expanding the data ecosystemExperience deploying and maintaining production machine learning systemsExperience with specialized data types such as natural language, time-series, or recommendation systemsImplementing and fine-tuning large language models or other generative AI systems for specific business applicationsBuilding AI-powered products or features that have been successfully deployed to end usersExperience with prompt engineering and RAG systemsContributions to open-source AI projects or research publications in machine learning or generative AIProficiency with AI services on cloud platforms (AWS Bedrock, GCP Vertex AI, Azure OpenAI)Work HoursThis position will require you to be available during core business hours and participate in an on-call rotation.Work Location(s) & Travel Requirements:This position is open to the following preferred office location:San Francisco, CAFastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.SF / LA Fair Chance Ordinance StatementPursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance and the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.SalaryThe estimated salary range for this position is $181,220.00 - $217,464.00Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location.This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary bonus programs.BenefitsWe care about you.
