The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.Duties And ResponsibilitiesTeach college success and career, and personal development coursesProvide comprehensive counseling services to students, including academic, career, and personal counseling on a drop-in and appointment basisAssist students in clarifying their educational goals, developing student educational plans (SEPs), and selecting coursesCollaborate with both instructional and counseling faculty and staff and with special programs such as First Year Experience, CalWORKS, CARE, DSPS, and EOPS to maximize student successParticipate in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities at the collegeParticipate in outreach activities and events in campus classrooms, local high schools, adult schools, and community agenciesProvide follow-up services to students on probation and dismissal statusUtilize and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods, which include integrating technology to support student learning and career objectivesKnowledge OfEmployment Standards (acquired through education, training, and/or experience)The matriculation process as it applies to California Community CollegesCounseling and student development theories and relevant applications to program developmentUniversity articulation agreements and transfer requirements for counseling community college studentsSkills And AbilitiesTeaching college success and career and personal development coursesPreparation for or experience in designing and preparing Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for community college studentsProvide short-term personal counseling to students from diverse backgroundsDevelop and maintain student counseling notes in a timely and effective mannerDemonstrate strength in interpersonal communicationExperience with intervention programs that support student successDevelop innovative programs that strengthen the quality of counseling services to studentsUse computer databases to retrieve student, college, and career informationUse a variety of career assessmentsMake appropriate college and community referralsCounseling at a California community collegeJob RequirementsMaster's or above in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent (see below) (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom.Note: If you believe your degree, academic background, or professional achievements are equivalent to the stated minimum qualifications, please complete the Application for Equivalence - For Faculty Positions (you may choose more than one category), which is available as an option during the application submission process.
