The Director - First Year Experience develops, evaluates, and facilitates cross-functional student programs, grounded in a deep understanding of student development theory and lived experiences of students across the student life-cycle. Serving as a cross-functional liaison and project manager between the Offices of Student Services, Instruction, Health Sciences, Adult Education, Community/Continuing Education, and Nursing, the Director of FYE collaborates with the stakeholders across the college and in the community to inform programming for students. The Director creates programing that focuses on identity, equity, and inclusivity to ensure students are able to be their full selves at Malcolm X College. The Director will coordinate the First Year Experience Connected Community to ensure system-wide adoption of an academic alert system for all first-year students, which involves cross-functional adoption of EAB Navigate, faculty, advising, academic support, student activities, and Wellness Center support for faculty and classroom instruction.The Director of FYE will oversee new student orientation and the Malcolm X First Year Experience programs, including the 16 week-first semester program and fall/spring transfer orientation as well as create and work with other first-year engagement programs. The Director will also create ongoing opportunities to assist in the academic and social transition and integration of first-year students to the Malcolm X College community. Under the leadership of the Director of First Year Experience, these initiatives will inform future project development. We are committed to equity and inclusiveness, wellness and personal development.Primary ObjectiveReporting to a Dean or assigned administrator, the Director - First Year Experience (FYE) works as a member of a district-wide FYE lab community to create, innovate, share, and grow strategies and interventions in collaboration with college and district key stakeholders, providing a strategic andcollaborative approach to improving first-year student outcomes.The Director - First Year Experience works to create a framework for a comprehensive district-wide FYE plan, providing a unified approach in developing strategies and interventions designed to close equity gaps, improve first-year student outcomes and increase retention and success rates for new students.The Director- First Year Experience manages the implementation of a college’s FYE plan, executing programs and initiatives to support first-year students in their academic and social transition and integration into the college community. Performs related duties as required.Note: Some evening and weekend work requiredEssential DutiesDistrict FYE Lab CommunityWorks with other college FYE leads, college researchers/directors of strategic initiatives, and District Office partners to develop a CCC FYE success framework.Develops a college-specific FYE theory of action and plan to effectively drive student outcomes.Tracks and monitors FYE activities, progress, and outcomes, leveraging Navigate and other system tools.Actively participates in the district-wide FYE lab community meetings with updates, reflections, suggestions, and outcome reports.College Specific ResponsibilitiesWorks collaboratively with cross-functional teams to implement a framework of programs and support services for first-year students including orientation, college success classes/workshops, academic alert system, and welcome events.Collaborates and maintains working partnerships with staff across college departments and faculty to ensure successful implementation of student support structures.Facilitates the integration of first-year student and other targeted populations to the college community, coordinating campus events to introduce students to co-curricular activities, support programs and services, student organizations and other student engagement opportunities.Monitors and measures FYE program activities including student engagement/participation, and analyzes student enrollment and retention data to assess program success and impact on student retention.Evaluates FYE programs and initiatives and draws upon best practices and emerging trends in student transition, retention and engagement to effect changes and ensure continuous improvement and growth.Leads work teams in the monitoring of first-year students to identify areas for improvement, service gaps, and opportunities to assist students in maintaining academic success and successfully transitioning to a college environment.Develops on-going opportunities to assist in the academic and social transition and integration of first-year students to the CCC community.QualificationsBachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, social work, business orrelated field3-5 years of experience in student services or a related field in a higher education institution ORMaster’s degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling orrelated field with 1-2 years related professional experienceKnowledge of student development theory and best practicesKnowledge of first-year student program best practices; principles and theories that strengthenresiliency factors for first-year studentKnowledge of academic support structures relating to student retention and successExcellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skillsDemonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusiveness, and equity in education.Must be able and willing to work some evenings and weekendsProficiency in the use of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)Salary Range: $70,251.00-74,000 annuallyOffered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as other factors such as internal equity.Benefits information is found at OFFER: Excellent health and welfare benefit package and long-term savings and investment programs including 403(b) & 457(b) Investment Plans and a pension plan with the State University Retirement System (SURS) Plan.
