We are looking for a General Counsel to join our dynamic leadership team. This executive role reports directly to the CEO and will play a defining role in our business. The legal team is a critical support function across all aspects of the business and is deeply integrated into our product and business strategy.Who you are:To be successful in this role you’ll need legal and business expertise with a passion for a developing fintech category. You’ll be a high-character individual who leads with integrity, is a rolls-up-your-sleeves team player, and has the confidence to guide others. You are skilled at assessing and providing organized legal guidance on short timelines and then helping to execute business decisions. As General Counsel in a young but growing industry, you will need to love practical problem-solving in a complex and dynamic environment.As General Counsel, you will oversee all strategic and tactical legal initiatives for Hometap. As part of the executive team, you will provide effective advice on company strategies and their implementation, manage the legal and compliance function, and oversee the work of outside counsel. You will help build a legal strategy that aligns with our business, legal, and ethical responsibilities, and you will be our chief legal spokesperson with investors, regulators, and other stakeholders.At Hometap, the legal function consists of three categories you will be directly responsible for:Regulatory MattersAs a new product in the consumer home financing space, Hometap must be aware of and compliant with applicable federal, state, and local laws. You will help develop legal positions and compliance strategies, oversee a long-term state-by-state rollout, assess new product opportunities, and maintain a regulatory framework. You’ll lead investigations or litigation with external counsel, and build relationships with industry trade associations.Capital MarketsHometap’s growth requires capital and a sustained investment program. You will help maintain existing funds and credit facilities and explore new structures and sources of capital, overseeing the legal and compliance aspects of fundraising, including terms, fund formation, and documentation.General CorporateYou will oversee general corporate matters at Hometap, including vendor contracts, NDAs, employee agreements, equity grants, and compliance documentation.ResponsibilitiesYou will be responsible for:Legal & RegulatoryLeading Hometap’s overall legal strategy and risk assessment with emphasis on regulatory compliance, litigation management, and product expansionWorking with regulators and policymakers at state and federal levels and representing Hometap in trade associationsManaging the Legal & Compliance teamsDriving processes and infrastructure to scale legal review, approvals, and record keepingInterfacing with executive leadership and the Board to provide legal and strategic adviceTracking legislative, business, and regulatory issues affecting operations and compliance programsManaging external counsel and external advisors, optimizing cost and qualityManaging litigation outcomes for both plaintiff and defendant rolesCorporate Growth & GovernanceCollaborating with Capital Markets on strategic capital formationOverseeing structuring, drafting, and negotiation of commercial agreementsAdvising on legal aspects of financing activitiesManaging outside counsel relationshipsAdvising management on employment and HR mattersWhat you bringSignificant experience in Regulatory matters, with success in at least one other major categoryJ.D. from an ABA-accredited law schoolBar admission in your state of residenceSignificant in-house experience (5+ years) managing a legal team in an emerging growth companyExtensive knowledge of federal and state regulatory and consumer financial services lawsComfort representing Hometap in various settings and across stakeholder groups as a spokespersonAnalytical problem-solving skillsStrong communication and organizational skillsDirect experience in consumer home financing or related space is a major plusHometap is on a mission to make homeownership less stressful and more accessible.
