You'll be responsible for reporting on the challenges facing science and scientific institutions in the US and beyond. The ideal candidate will have both exceptional investigative skills and deep experience in reporting on efforts to undermine and delegitimize science and public health.Department: EditorialReports to: Deputy Editor and Editor, US InvestigationsLocation: Washington, DCHybrid/Remote/In-Person: HybridTerms and conditions: Permanent, full-time, News Media Guild PositionAbout the RoleProduce a combination of investigative scoops and mid- and long-range stories that provide deep analysis and major revelations about the current challenges facing scientists and scientific and public health institutionsFocus primarily on US science stories but also explore and explain these developments' ramifications for science, the environment and public health around the globeExplain these stories clearly to lay readers with insightful context and lucid proseBring, build and maintain an extensive network of relevant sources and contacts locally, nationally and globallyCollaborate with the editors and audience engagement and membership teams to develop outreach strategies for stories, including creating multimedia and social media content and reportingAbout YouExcellent knowledge and understanding of issues within science, public health and related areasStrong track record of writing about science in lucid, accessible prose with nuance and contextHigh-level investigative skills and established proficiency at producing scoops, agenda-setting analyses and in-depth investigative articlesExpertise in using documents, data, and other journalistic tools to develop and report about science, scientists and institutions that develop or rely on scientific knowledgeExperience reporting on misinformation, disinformation and other factors that undermine public trust and support for scienceAbility to communicate succinctly and clearly in audio or video formats and on social platforms to amplify your written storiesIdeally, you'll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this roleHow to ApplyWe know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven't thought of.
