Experience and Employee TypeExperience Years: 10+ Years of ExperienceEmployee Type: RegularAbout the OpportunityThe Applied Research Lead for the US and Baja position will provide leadership to Applied Research programs in Northern & Southern California, Baja California (MEX), Eastern US and Canada. This position will be responsible for developing research plans that align with business objectives developed by Supply Directors, Berry Leadership and District Managers. Additionally, this position will leverage Global Applied Research Networks to accelerate learnings around deployment of new genetics and optimizing plant type and growing systems across all berry crops. This leadership position requires the ability to manage multiple initiatives, facilitate positive and solution-oriented discussions with key stakeholders, and possess a high-level understanding of plant science and plant physiology, particularly in agronomic systems across multiple geographies.ResponsibilitiesProvides leadership and vision in developing relevant plant research programs to serve Driscoll’s Business Unit strategies in the US, Canada, and BajaLeads development of trialing strategies for new selections to identify strengths and challenges of promising genetics and communicates opportunities to stakeholdersLeverages Global Research Network to develop innovative growing systems and deploy new geneticsPartners with Nursery Applied Research programs to optimize plant type and growing systems, ensuring adequate small plot plant volumes at key breeding stages, and collaborates with Agronomy to promote extension and adoption efforts with growersLeads the US, Canada, and Baja Applied Research Teams, providing mentorship, direction, and fostering a culture of innovation and curiosityDevelops talent through formal and informal relationships and organizational structuresMaintains a deep understanding of breeding programs, production systems, and environments to identify research solutions that enhance genetic valueDevelops training programs to improve research robustness and business-oriented plant science acumenRecruits, onboard, and coaches staff to ensure learning and career development aligned with company valuesDomestic and international travel required up to 30%Represents Driscoll’s professionally and ethically in all interactionsCandidate ProfileRequirementsMaster’s degree in Plant Sciences, Agriculture Science, Horticulture, or related field; PhD preferred but not required10+ years of experience, preferably with applied research for growersStrong leadership skills with a successful track record in managing teams and projectsAbility to translate research findings from small plots and large-scale trials across geographiesPreferred Qualifications & Leadership CompetenciesSpanish language skills strongly preferredCalifornia driver’s license and ability to be insured under company vehicleValid passport and ability to travel internationallyStrategic mindset, innovative, goal-oriented, collaborative, engaging, talent developer, courageousThe estimated salary range for this position is $126,000 to $173,000 USD.
