Job Description

Get AI-powered advice on this job and more exclusive features.Join a bold and interdisciplinary team at the frontier of regenerative medicine and synthetic biology. We're developing precisely controlled systems to build vascularized, engineered tissues from the ground up. We’re seeking a Biomedical Engineer to lead the design and prototyping of microfluidic perfusion systems and bioreactors for solid-state, large-scale tissue production. This role is ideal for a creative engineer excited by the technical and biological challenges of building next-generation tissue culture platforms. You’ll play a key role in transforming our core scientific concepts—spatially patterned cell differentiation, optically controlled gene expression, and tissue fabrication—into integrated, functional devices. As a founding member of our engineering team, you will receive significant equity, and help determine crucial directions for the company. What You’ll Do:Design, prototype, and iterate on perfusion bioreactor systems and fluid delivery devices for large-scale tissue growth.Research and develop various strategies for perfusion delivery across large tissues, with a focus on enabling biologically relevant flow rates, including strategies that involve mechanical piping, hydrogel modeling or biological development of vasculature. This work includes theoretical modeling of fluid flow across the bioreactor, prototyping and iterative testing.Explore various hydrogel formulations and identify optimal formulations for solid tissue collaboration with our stem cell biologists, implement and develop large-scale 3D tissue culture methods, by modulating fluid flow rates, media chemical composition, hydrogel biophysics and device architectureCollaborate with our synthetic biologists to integrate fluid handling systems and light delivery to enable deployment of our optogenetic workflows.Develop reproducible fabrication workflows using soft lithography, stereolithography, or other precision microfabrication techniques.Analyze device performance across multiple metrics, including tissue viability, perfusion efficiency, differentiation efficiency, and spatial pattern fidelity.Qualifications:Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field, with 2+ years postdoctoral or industry experience, OR M.S. with 4+ years of industry experience in relevant roles.Demonstrated experience designing and building microfluidic or perfusion-based systems for tissue culture, organ-on-a-chip, or related platforms.Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and experience with rapid prototyping and device fabrication techniques.Deep understanding of fluid mechanics in biological systems, including shear stress, flow rate control, and mass transportPreferred Experience:Experience working with hollow fiber bioreactors, perfusable scaffolds, or biofabrication platforms.Familiarity with integration of electronics, sensors, or optical components into biological devices.Experience collaborating with biologists or managing interdisciplinary research projects.Prior experience engineering perfused microvasculature highly valuedBackground in building automated or semi-automated systems (robotic-assisted assembly is a plus).Who You Are:A hands-on builder with strong design instincts and a drive to turn ideas into robust, working fortable operating in an early-stage environment where iteration and adaptability are critical.Collaborative, communicative, and energized by working at the interface of biology, engineering, and design.Eager to make real contributions to a company redefining the future of tissue engineering and organ manufacturing. Why Join Us:We are a small but mighty team of scientists who believe in a principled approach to tissue engineering. We engage in fun and rigorous research. We welcome scientists who seek an intellectual home but are driven to action—we understand the importance of controls, excellent experimental design, and mastery over the literature, but we are not willing to stop tinkering, exploring, and developing our ideas in the quest for perfection. We put our egos aside and credit teams, not individuals, for progress. That said, we value individuality, and we carefully select our team members, with an emphasis on respecting and encouraging all kinds of diversity. We believe that to understand how different cell types work together, we need many different ways of thinking and working.Join us in shaping the future of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Together, we’ll tackle ambitious challenges and push the boundaries of what’s possible.
