OverviewTitle: Director of ESS EngineeringDepartment: Technology CenterLocation: Houston, TXSupervisor: Executive Vice President/ Head of Technology CenterFLSA Status: ExemptPosition Status: Permanent, Full-TimeWork Status (Hybrid/In-Office): HybridSummary: The Director of ESS Engineering will be responsible for developing Grid-scale Energy Storage System products and solutions. They will oversee the team handling project design for the battery energy storage solution, supporting the development, design, and deployment of energy storage facilities, both standalone and collocated with solar generation. The Director will be leading a team of 10 engineers, designers, and product managers.Base pay$180,000.00/yr - $240,000.00/yrThis range is provided by Qcells EPC. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.DetailsExecutive level reporting: Reports to the Executive Vice President of Technology Center, or another management personnel designated by the President. Remote-friendly; reports out of the Houston, TX office. Typical hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00am–5:00pm or 9:00am–6:00pm local time. Overtime and weekend work may be required. Travel up to 40%.ResponsibilitiesProvide internal subject matter expertise on battery storage technology and performance for utility-scale energy storage products and services.Oversee all ESS engineering activities, delegate work to the engineering team, and ensure high-quality work products.Develop, implement, and track engineering KPI programs.Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) engineering activities based on input from clients, stakeholders, and leadership.Collaborate with Product Management and Supply Chain Management to identify product efficiencies and improvements; lead engineering activities to implement changes.Lead design reviews to ensure products meet technical requirements and KPIs.Develop department standards, processes, and procedures.Lead engineering scope for facilities and departments to prepare for accreditation and quality audits.Develop compliance training for team members and new hires.Ensure documentation procedures are established and followed.Identify and implement changes to department structure, processes, or personnel as needed.Provide technical leadership in supplier negotiations.Coordinate external resources (engineers, consultants) as needed in the design and development process.Manage energy storage product development activities: safety requirements, early-career engineer development, RFP technical requirements, vendor management, and operation/discharge profile creation.Support product development across design, prototyping, certification, manufacturing, and supply chain; assist in software/hardware selection.Offer technical insights to enable allowable product configurations and future technology directions.Develop tools and processes for continuous improvement across teams.Ensure regular attendance as an essential job duty per company policy.Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by management.Required qualificationsBachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field.10+ years of professional experience as a project/ electrical/ systems engineer in the electric power industry, focusing on product development and deployment.5+ years of experience with battery energy storage systems, including Grid-scale BESS knowledge.Strong written and oral communication skills, with ability to present ideas clearly to internal and external audiences.Direct System Integration experience is a plus.Physical demandsStationary position: up to 90% of the time; seated up to 8 hours per day.Move/Traverse: infrequent bending, standing, stooping, or walking.Carry weight: occasional lifting up to 10 pounds.Hearing and speech: able to communicate effectively with others.Sight: frequent use of computer and documents.Climb: occasionally ascend/descend stairs.Travel: up to 40% as needed.Work environmentRegular professional office setting; varied conditions if on construction site.Possible transition to onsite or hybrid arrangement per Office Mobilization Plan.Hanwha Qcells is proud to be an at-will Equal Opportunity Employer and prohibits discrimination against race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, marital status, pregnancy, citizenship, disability, protected veteran status and other classifications protected by law.
