Figure is an AI Robotics company developing a general purpose humanoid. Our humanoid robot, Figure 02, is designed for commercial tasks and the home. We are based in San Jose, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration. It’s time to build.We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in electric motor component design. You will be part of a fast-paced, cross-functional team building compact, high-performance actuators for a new class of humanoid robots. This role is ideal for an engineer with a few years of industry experience who thrives in a hands-on environment and is passionate about precision mechanical design, material selection, and rotor dynamics.Responsibilities:Own the mechanical design of motor subcomponents including rotor and stator laminations, shaft assemblies, and magnet retention structuresDesign, release, and iterate complex lamination stacks for high-efficiency, high-speed permanent magnet motorsCollaborate closely with the electromagnetic, thermal, and control teams to ensure mechanical solutions meet overall system requirementsWork on magnet selection and adhesive strategies for permanent magnet rotors, with a focus on structural integrity and manufacturabilityPerform structural FEA for rotor stress and rotor dynamics (burst speed, critical speed, balancing strategy)Drive motor CAD in CATIA and manage BOMs and drawing packages from prototype to productionOversee and support motor rotor balancing (static and dynamic)Interface with vendors for lamination, shaft, and magnet sourcing and fabricationRequirements:Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering2+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably involving electric motors or rotating machineryStrong fundamentals in stress analysis, material selection, and tolerance stack-upsExperience designing for high-speed rotating systems, including consideration of burst strength and rotor balancingProficiency in CAD tools, preferably CATIA V5 or V6Knowledge of adhesives, magnet bonding, and rotor manufacturing best practicesStrong communication skills and a team-first mindsetBonus Qualifications:Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on dynamics, materials, or electromechanical systemsPrior experience designing SPM (surface permanent magnet) rotors and statorsHands-on experience with motor prototyping and test setupsFamiliarity with FEA tools like Ansys Mechanical or AbaqusUnderstanding of manufacturing processes such as lamination stamping, shrink fits, and adhesive curingThe US base salary range for this full-time position is between $130,000 and $160,000 annually.The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role.
