Our technology enables electrified platforms, portable power, and unmanned systems—supporting sustainable, flexible mobility and power.About LiquidPistonLiquidPiston is an R&D-driven technology company with a strong IP portfolio in engine architecture, componentry, and supporting technologies.The RoleAs Vice President of Engineering, you will be a key member of the executive leadership team, reporting to the CEO. This role leads the transition from deep R&D to product development and commercialization, guiding a growing engineering team and defining LiquidPiston’s future product lines.You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team through scaling from ~20 to 40+ engineers in the near term, delivering breakthrough engine and generator systems and ensuring rapid iteration, quality, and cross-functional alignment.This role requires a balance of technical depth, leadership, and strategic vision across mechanical, electrical, systems, and software engineering.Key ResponsibilitiesLead and grow a multidisciplinary engineering team across mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and testing disciplinesOversee design, development, prototyping, testing, and validation of advanced rotary engines and generator systemsProvide hands-on technical guidance in engine architecture, calibration, system integration, and controlsEnsure timely delivery of project milestones from concept to production-ready prototypesDefine engineering standards, development processes, documentation, and quality systemsCollaborate with the CEO, CTO, and business development to align engineering with market opportunities and customer needsSupport and co-author technical proposals and whitepapers for government and commercial funding opportunitiesRepresent the company in meetings with strategic partners, customers, and government agencies (e.g., DARPA, DOE)Manage external resources including contractors, vendors, and joint development partnersBuild a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvementQualificationsB.S. in Mechanical Engineering; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred15+ years in engineering leadership roles, ideally in startups or early-stage hardware companiesDeep knowledge of combustion engine systems—rotary or piston—including calibration, design, testing, and controlFamiliarity with generator systems, hybrid powertrains, and energy storage componentsExperience managing engineering teams through full lifecycle developmentPrior exposure to government-funded R&D (DARPA, DOE, DoD) desirableExperience in high-mix R&D or low-volume production environmentsProficient in SolidWorks, LabVIEW, Mastercam, MATLAB, Converge, GT Suite, ANSYSAbility to balance technical leadership with strategic decision-making under tight timelinesPersonal Qualities and Cultural FitStrong leadership presence and ability to inspire high-performing teamsCollaborative mindset with clear communication and delegationFast learner, quick thinker, and adaptableTechnically curious with ownership and accountabilityStrategic yet hands-on; comfortable from whiteboard to shop floorHigh energy, mission-driven with meaningful impactExcellent communicator with experience presenting to executives, boards, investors, and partnersEnthusiastic about redefining propulsion and powerBenefitsFlexible PTO to support work-life balanceComprehensive healthcare coverage: medical, dental, and visionEquity participation: RSUs for all permanent employees401(k) with match: 100% up to 3%, plus 50% match for 3–5%Growth opportunities: Mentorship, training, and leadership developmentOur CultureWe challenge convention, move fast, think boldly, and iterate quickly.
