Job Description

OverviewAttorney role at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The Legal Division seeks enthusiastic and motivated attorneys to support the Commission’s high-impact regulatory work.ResponsibilitiesLitigate and advise on matters as varied as just and reasonable utility rates, safety, reliability, cybersecurity, climate change, renewable energy, and environmental protection.Address issues such as internet neutrality, phone service quality and universal communications, safe drinking water, water conservation, environmental justice, and building decarbonization.Engage in civil enforcement, government and public contracting law, and other consumer protection responsibilities.Serve as staff counsel in general rate cases, investigations, enforcement matters, and other administrative proceedings before the Commission; prepare and present cases for the staff; represent staff at public hearings.Review applications for rehearing and assess legal error; defend Commission decisions on appeal.Provide advisory legal counsel in the preparation of Commission decisions and orders; advise Commissioners, Administrative Law Judges, and staff on regulatory statutes, orders, rules, and regulations.Represent the Commission and the State before Federal and State courts and administrative agencies.Qualifications and RequirementsThe position requires a State Bar of California license. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.Eligibility: applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and complete any required examinations or examination bulletins as applicable.Special RequirementsState Bar of California license is required.
