AES seeks an attorney with significant environmental and real estate experience for its U.S. Utilities Businesses in Indiana and Ohio, supporting other Generation businesses. This role reports to the U.S. Utilities General Counsel, advising on environmental compliance, real estate transactions, and managing litigation and administrative proceedings. The position involves managing internal legal efforts and outside counsel, with industry experience preferred. Office locations are Indianapolis, IN, or Dayton, OH. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Advise the businesses on environmental laws and regulations. Represent the businesses in meetings with regulatory agencies, including IDEM, US & Ohio EPA. Develop strategies to defend and resolve environmental proceedings. Manage environmental litigation, including permitting appeals. Interact with environmental agencies on permitting, enforcement, and appeals. Negotiate and review legal documents related to real estate ownership and transactions. Support environmental and real estate due diligence in M&A and other transactions. Draft environmental disclosures for SEC reporting. Assist in other legal matters as needed. Desired Experience and Attributes J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed in at least one state. 6+ years of relevant experience in a large law firm or comparable in-house environment with a sophisticated environmental practice. Energy sector experience preferred. Experience with regulations like CAA, CWA, CERCLA, & RCRA. Decisive, organized, action-oriented, and commercially focused. Ability to collaborate across functions and businesses. Self-driven, capable of handling broad legal assignments with minimal supervision. Excellent regulatory, drafting, and negotiation skills. Good time management and adaptability, with limited travel expected. Strong analytical, problem-solving, judgment, and discretion skills. Unquestionable ethics and integrity.
