Join to apply for the Integrated Optics Module Field Lead role at Physics WorldCompany: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) – National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF & PS).OverviewYou will support the Target and Experimental Systems (TExS) section of NIF & PS. The National Ignition Facility is home to the world’s most powerful and energetic laser. You will lead the approved scope of work and provide advanced technical solutions in the setup, recovery, and maintenance of Final Optics Assemblies and Integrated Optics Modules (IOM) in support of NIF shot operations. This role is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division of the Engineering Directorate.NIF operates 24/7 with a shift schedule that may include overtime; the role will initially focus on IOM exchange times and maintenance days, with the schedule aligning to facility availability and potentially changing over time.ResponsibilitiesLead, train, and mentor a team of technicians in exchanging IOMs.Define and execute exchange work scope (IOM qual, hoisting and rigging, optics exchanges, Rad Worker 2).Provide advanced technical support for installation and operation of complex diagnostic systems and final optics assemblies for maintenance and commissioning; maintain operational status of NIF facility subsystems, working independently with minimal direction.Offer technical guidance to Target Area Operators to meet evolving on-floor priorities.Coordinate final optics activities with supervisory staff in the NIF Control Room.Identify, analyze, implement, document, and maintain process improvements for complex technical problems and procedures, establishing or modifying guidelines as needed.Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble complex mechanical components and systems; plan, set priorities, and select equipment/work methods.Plan, organize, and lead complete projects of limited scope.Balance safety, security, quality, and efficiency in leadership of technicians.Perform other duties as assigned.QualificationsAbility to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).Associate degree in Mechanical or Electrical Technology, or related field; or related certificate/diploma with relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical/engineering field with mechanical training.Advanced technical skills in relevant technologies and processes, including interpreting vacuum systems; ability to solve complex hardware or system challenges.Experience working independently on challenging technical assignments with proven ability to meet project requirements and deadlines; advanced experience with setup, recovery, and maintenance of diagnostic equipment and/or optical assemblies.Ability to provide technical direction, leadership, and mentorship in technical operations or R&D environments; experience with formal procedures, work controls, and configuration management.Ability to complete and maintain required certifications; ability to work in confined/restricted areas and in environments with Be-containing or radiological materials; respirator use may be required.Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills for collaboration and technical discussions.Desirable QualificationsExperience with radiological materials and associated controls.Experience with development, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems and clean protocol techniques.Experience with mechanical drawings and procedures; ability to pass NIF Radiological Worker II qualification.Position InformationThis is a Career Indefinite position, open to LLNL employees and external candidates.Why LLNLIncluded in 2025 Best Places to Work by GlassdoorFlexible Benefits Package401(k); Relocation AssistanceEducation Reimbursement ProgramFlexible schedules (project dependent)Values-based culture and commitment to inclusionSecurity ClearanceThis position requires a DOE Q-level clearance.
