OverviewThe Amara Legal Center provides free legal services to individuals whose rights have been violated through commercial sex, whether by choice, coercion, or circumstance. Amara serves survivors of sex trafficking and other individuals harmed by commercial sex in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. We are committed to raising public awareness of the legal issues facing our clients, connecting our clients with vital social services, and providing excellent legal representation to all of our clients.Bring your skills to the Amara Legal Center and help make a difference. Amara is recruiting individuals to join the Board of Directors. We seek candidates who are passionate about our work to provide free, trauma-informed legal services to survivors of sex trafficking and sex workers in the DC-metropolitan area. Desired skills include nonprofit board experience, fundraising, financial management, accounting/finance, event planning, communications, marketing, and knowledge of the commercial sex industry or a desire to learn. We strongly encourage individuals with lived experience and individuals from underrepresented groups to apply. For more information, please visit our website at Member ResponsibilitiesPrepare for, attend, and actively participate in quarterly board meetingsAdvance Amara’s mission by promoting the organization’s work in your personal and professional networksUnderstand and learn about the organization’s mission, programs, needs, and overall purposeFully engage in fundraising to identify and secure the financial resources necessary for the organization to advance its missionMeet/exceed annual $1,000 “give/get” through a personal financial donation or other fundraising effortsServe on at least one committee (Advancement, Governance, Executive, or Finance)Maintain regular and open communication with the board and Executive DirectorRecruit and onboard new board membersApprove Amara’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions, in accordance with the board’s fiduciary dutiesPartner with the Executive Director to ensure compliance with the organization’s legal obligationsContribute to the annual performance evaluation of the Executive DirectorMaintain confidentiality about internal matters of the organizationRespect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences to the board and the organizationAttend Amara fundraising and awareness eventsDesired QualificationsPassion for Amara’s mission and commitment to Amara’s client populationExperience and/or expertise in fundraising, event planning, nonprofit governance/development, financial management, accounting, marketing, or related areasStrong network with connections to corporations, government, foundations, and other donorsEnthusiasm and willingness to promote the organization through your network and to identify/cultivate relationships with new donorsLeadership skills and experience in initiating and carrying out fundraisers or other projectsCommitment to teamwork, communication, and professionalismAmara’s Board Members serve a three-year term with eligibility for re-appointment for additional terms.
