OverviewStaff Engineer – Tysons (McLean), VA. The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) seeks an experienced Staff Engineer to support the Association’s activities, programs, and safety initiatives in aviation safety related to flight deck technologies and avionics of transport category aircraft and aircraft intended for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) operations in the Airspace System (NAS).The Staff Engineer provides project coordination, subject matter expertise, and analysis in areas including avionics, radio spectrum, flight deck design, and interoperability-related rules and industry standards at RTCA, ASTM, etc. They coordinate with ALPA and appropriate government agencies and the broader aviation industry, building and maintaining their network of government and industry contacts.The role includes developing written communications to the membership, to governments in response to requests for comment, and to industry groups on aviation safety and security issues, in coordination with Association leadership, Committee representatives, and staff. They represent ALPA to government agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transport Canada (TC), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and NAV CANADA, and support ALPA Air Safety Organization (ASO) pilot representatives on relevant committees and meetings with industry/government stakeholders on assigned work.Travel: 10 - 20%.Equal Opportunity / Workplace: ALPA is an equal opportunity employer committed to a safe workplace. Coursework or training in Avionics design and flight deck design from an accredited college or university; or the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.Minimum three (3) years of related experience in the aviation industry; five (5) or more years strongly related to the integration of flight operations for transport category aircraft, and aircraft intended for AAM operations in the NAS, and/or other related aviation areas.Understanding of aviation safety concepts related to industry flight deck and avionics standards development is highly desired.Former employment at airlines, the FAA, or industry segments in a relevant capacity is extremely helpful.Special expertise in U.S. and Canadian Aviation Regulations (FARs and CARs), policies and standards development related to avionics and flight deck technologies for aircraft, AAM, and knowledge of ICAO and/or international safety data systems.Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing demands.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.Technical writing and presentation skills to communicate with Association members and executives, government and industry representatives, and staff.Able to work independently and proactively identify and respond to issues and problems.On a rotation basis, may answer calls to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and the Pilot Peer Support line, including outside business hours, weekends, and holidays.Software: Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.Able to work a flexible schedule on short notice as needed.Physical DemandsNote: The physical demands described herein are characteristic of those required to perform the essential functions of this position.
