OverviewSenior Machine Learning Scientist (USA Remote)Machine Learning is integral to the continued success of our company. Our product roadmap is exciting and ambitious. You will join a global team of curious, helpful, and independent scientists and engineers, united by a commitment to deliver cutting-edge, well-engineered Machine Learning systems. You will work closely with product and engineering teams across Turnitin to integrate Machine Learning into a broad suite of learning, teaching and integrity products. The role has global reach and scale, with impact on instructors and students worldwide.ResponsibilitiesWork with subject matter experts and product owners to determine what questions should be asked and what questions can be answered.Curate, generate, and annotate data, and create optimal datasets following responsible data collection and model maintenance practices.Prepare trainable datasets from raw data using SQL and scripting languages; visualize when necessary.Develop and tune Machine Learning models, including dataset selection, architectures, and production-ready code.Utilize, adopt, and fine-tune Language Models, including third-party LLMs (via prompt engineering and orchestration) and locally hosted LMs.Stay current in the field by reading research papers, testing new architectures and LLMs, and sharing findings.Optimize models for scaled production municate insights, model behavior, and limitations to peers, subject matter experts, and product owners.Write clean, efficient, modular code with automated tests and documentation.Keep up to date with technology and explain technical choices to the organization.QualificationsExperience with text data to build Deep Learning and ML models (supervised and unsupervised); experience with vision or speech modalities is a plus.Strong understanding of the math and theory behind ML/DL.Software engineering background with at least 8 years of experience (Python, SQL, Unix, git, GitHub).ML development skills with experiment tracking (e.g., AWS SageMaker, Hugging Face, transformers, PyTorch, scikit-learn, Jupyter, Weights & Biases).Understanding of Language Models, including training, fine-tuning, and familiarity with LM families.Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, AI, ML, applied math, or related field; or exceptional industry experience. Computer Science background required; software development proficiency is a prerequisite.Excellent communication and teamwork skills; fluent in written and spoken English.PreferredExperience coding for at-scale production; building back-end API services or libraries.DevOps skills (Docker, AWS EC2/Batch/Lambda).Experience building front-ends for demos or prototypes (React, JavaScript, Flask).Experience with prompting, fine-tuning, or training LLMs using industry platforms.Showcase previous work (website, presentations, or open source).Compensation and BenefitsExpected annual base salary range: $111,000/year to $185,000/year. This position is bonus eligible/commission-based.
