OverviewHPC Engineer (Biohub Network) role at Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network is an opportunity to develop, support and optimize the CZ Biohub HPC systems. The position involves strengthening and expanding the scientific computational capacity to support the Biohub’s expanding global scientific leadership. You will work with day-to-day operations of HPC systems including systems administration, monitoring and parallel filesystem performance, up to and including network components. You will manage cluster-level services via the SLURM scheduler as well as user-facing services such as Open OnDemand and NoMachine. The ideal candidate will install, configure and optimize applications and provide user support. You will collaborate with science teams to translate experimental descriptions into software and hardware requirements across all phases of the scientific lifecycle.ResponsibilitiesManage cluster-level services via the SLURM scheduler as well as user-facing services such as Open OnDemand and NoMachineInstall, configure and optimize applications and provide user supportWork with multiple science teams to translate experimental descriptions into software and hardware requirements across all phases of the scientific lifecycle, including data ingest, analysis, management and storage, computation, authentication, tool development and other computational needsYou haveEssentialBachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Systems Engineering or related field or equivalent training/experienceMinimum of 7 years of experience in HPC computing environments or complex Linux environmentsExperience building on-prem HPC infrastructure and capacity planningExperience solving complex issues requiring in-depth evaluationExperience supporting scientific facilities and understanding scientific user needsExperience with HPC and cloud computing environmentsAbility to interact with diverse technical and scientific personnelStrong written and verbal communication skills for presenting scientific software developmentsAbility to reason about load, latency, bandwidth, performance, reliability, and cost to make sound engineering decisionsAbility to implement novel solutions quickly and creativelyTechnical requirementsProven ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex problems in HPC storage hardware, software systems, and networksConfiguring and administering parallel storage and storage subsystems (Lustre, NFS, Ceph, etc.)Installing, configuring, and maintaining job management tools (SLURM, Moab, TORQUE, PBS, etc.)Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, or derivatives; Linux services and technologies (dnsmasq, systemd, LDAP, PAM, sssd, OpenSSH, cgroups)Scripting languages (Bash, Python, Perl)Virtualization and containerization (ESXi, KVM/libvirt, Docker, Singularity); automation and orchestration tools (xCAT, Puppet, kickstart, Kubernetes, docker-compose, CloudFormation, Terraform)High performance networking technologies and hardware (Ethernet, Infiniband; Mellanox, Juniper)Configuring, installing, tuning and maintaining scientific application softwareFamiliarity with source control tools (Git or SVN)Nice to haveAbility to translate researchers/' scientific challenges into computational solutionsScientific background or experience in a university or research settingCompensationThe base pay range for this role in San Francisco, CA is Senior Staff Engineer $192,000 – $264,000 or Principal Engineer $216,000 – $297,000, adjusted based on geographic location. New hires are typically placed toward the lower end of the range with growth over time.
