Job Description

Position DescriptionProvide leadership, direction and operational management for cancer business development, clinical affiliations and outreach within Affiliations and Networks. The Assistant Vice President ensures departmental accountability to Duke's mission, vision, values, and policies with goals to: (1) improve community cancer care through DUHS affiliation consultation and education, (2) establish and operate income generating clinical and research programs with community hospitals, (3) position Duke as the preferred resource for cancer clinical program development and (4) enhance the image of and access to all DUHS cancer clinical and research programs.ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with DUHS (including DHIP), DCI, SOM and SON senior leaders to develop and support strategies for growth based on market analysis, revenue potential and brand protection.Create tactical plans with direct reports to execute strategic initiatives.Identify, develop and manage new business opportunities to maximize growth and network portfolio.Engage in internal departmental collaboration to develop and support department strategy, goals, and tactics.Develop and foster effective collaboration across Duke Health to advance cancer clinical and research affiliations.Work collaboratively in a dyad leadership relationship with the DCN Medical Director/Chief Medical Officer, coordinating strategic, operational, and clinical priorities while preserving shared accountability and autonomy of leadership.Create productive physician relationships to support leadership’s clinical initiatives.Ensure effective communication of affiliation initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.Partner with internal and external marketing teams to optimize communication strategies and manage co-branding across affiliates.Provide forums for staff input on improvement opportunities and oversee relevant education highlighting Duke experts and affiliate program needs.Oversee DCN leaders in measuring affiliation effectiveness and efficiency; lead program assessments and follow-up recommendations.Serve as a member of the departmental executive leadership team, supporting a systems approach across all Affiliations and Networks programs; improve operational and business processes to enhance efficiency and affiliate service.Identify opportunities to improve fiscal and operational performance.Directly manage a team of Senior Directors/Directors in supporting strategic and operational initiatives of the DCN and DHAN; collaboratively manage provider clinical services at affiliated programs.Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, and accrediting body requirements and with all applicable research rules and guidelines; monitor affiliate programs for DUHS criteria and communicate program progress to site and Duke Health leadership.Oversee department budgets and financial targets, revenue cycle and billing for assigned departments; collaborate with Duke Health senior leadership to secure resources to fulfill the DCN affiliations’ vision.QualificationsEducation: Master’s degree in a related field is required; healthcare and oncology concentration strongly preferred.Experience: Minimum five years in hospital operations including at least three years at the administrative leadership level. Ability to lead effectively in a matrixed organization with collaboration, judgment, and operational experience.Strong leadership, management, analytical, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.Knowledge of physician practice management, clinical operations, research practice, and healthcare payment systems with sound financial management.Motivation for professional growth; knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations.Ability to assess situations and implement improvements; skill in influencing diverse stakeholders; data-driven decision making.Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work with diverse individuals in multiple settings, promoting belonging and inclusiveness.Ability to travel to support affiliated sites (local, regional, and national travel required).Essential Physical Job FunctionsEssential Physical Job Functions: Some roles at Duke may require specific physical and/or mental abilities.
