OverviewWe are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Controller to join Coinbase’s finance team, focusing on Prime Financing and Capital Markets operations. This role drives the accurate and compliant accounting for complex digital asset lending, borrowing, derivatives, and other structured products. The ideal candidate will have deep technical accounting knowledge (US GAAP/IFRS), a strong understanding of traditional capital markets products and prime financing, and the ability to apply these principles to the cryptocurrency landscape. You will build scalable processes, ensure robust internal controls, and provide insightful financial analysis for rapidly expanding institutional offerings.What you’ll be doing (job duties):Develop and maintain accounting processes for prime financing and capital markets, ensuring compliance with GAAP/IFRS and crypto-specific guidance (e.g., FASB ASU 2023-08).Apply standards like ASC 815, ASC 860, and ASC 825 to activities such as crypto lending/borrowing, derivatives, and prime brokerage services.Oversee accurate and timely recording of transactions, including interest, trading gains/losses, fees, and collateral movements.Prepare and review journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements for prime financing and capital markets.Design and maintain SOX-compliant internal controls, addressing crypto-specific risks like custody, smart contracts, and private key management.Work with Product, Risk, and Legal teams to assess accounting implications of new products and ensure proper system setup.Identify opportunities to automate and improve accounting processes using blockchain data and external tools.Conduct P&L and balance sheet analysis, support audits, and stay updated on regulatory requirements impacting digital asset services.Assist in preparing regulatory filings and disclosures for prime financing and capital markets.Manage and mentor accounting teams, foster cross-department collaboration, and lead projects related to financial infrastructure and new product launches.What we look for in you (job requirements):Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.CPA designation required.10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 4-5 years specifically in prime brokerage, capital markets, or complex financial instruments accounting within a financial institution (e.g., investment bank, hedge fund, broker-dealer).Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and apply accounting principles to novel crypto transactions.Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate complex accounting issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.Highly detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.Experience with SOX compliance within a financial services context.Proficiency with large ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and advanced Google Suite skills.Nice to haveExperience with a crypto prime brokerage or institutional digital asset firm.Familiarity with specific crypto accounting software or blockchain analytics platforms.Experience with multi-currency accounting and foreign exchange impact on financial instruments.Proven, deep understanding and hands-on experience with digital assets, blockchain technology, and cryptocurrency markets. Familiarity with various crypto protocols, DeFi concepts, and common digital asset use cases.Pay and other detailsPay Range: $201,365 USD – $236,900 USD per year. Pay transparency and compensation details may vary by location.
