OverviewFinance Director at Issue One. This is a full-time remote position (hybrid if in DMV region) reporting to the Co-Founder and COO. Position requires 40 hours per week with full benefits.Base pay range$110,000.00/yr - $130,000.00/yrLocation: Remote (Hybrid if in DMV region)Seniority level: DirectorEmployment type: Full-timeSalary Grade: DirectorPosition detailsPosition: Finance DirectorStatus: Full-Time (40 hours per week, full benefits)Reports to: Co-Founder and COOSalary Range: $110,000-130,000Location: Remote (Hybrid if in DMV region)The Finance Director (FD) is a one-person department that oversees all accounting functions for both Issue One 501(c)(3) and Issue One Action 501(c)(4) and maintains an orderly system of controls over all transactions. The FD will be responsible for producing monthly financial reports, maintaining an adequate system of accounting records, and implementing a comprehensive set of controls and budgets. The FD will manage the month-end and year-end closing process and ensure all financial information remains accurate and meets all regulatory requirements.ResponsibilitiesDevelop Issue One's annual budget, as well as programmatic budgets for each department.Provide regular budgetary forecasts, analyze variances, and advise senior staff on causes, potential impact, and solutions.Create a monthly reporting package for the treasurer, COO, and CEO with a clear picture of financial health and recommendations.Ensure monthly bank reconciliation and support month-end and year-end close processes.Partner with the development team to ensure accuracy and co-understanding of revenue; input revenue information into QuickBooks Online.Operations and Vendor ManagementLead accounts payable process from invoice review to payments.Serve as primary administrator for , managing expense reimbursements, vendor payments, and approval workflows.Coordinate with VP of People and Culture and COO to conduct semi-monthly payroll and monthly retirement payroll processing.Evaluate, select, and implement an integrated HRIS and payroll platform to streamline payroll processes and enhance employee experience.Manage relationships with external institutions (banks, insurance, auditors, financial consultants).Compliance and RegulatoryManage local, state, and federal government reporting and tax filing; advise leadership on regulatory matters.Oversee dual-entity financials (501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4)) including expense allocation and firewall compliance.Stay current on regulatory changes affecting advocacy organizations and adjust processes as needed.Oversee external annual audit process and serve as primary contact for the audit firm.Program and Grant ManagementOversee finances for fiscal sponsors; allocate payroll and indirect costs based on staff time allocation.Assist in grant management and reporting for multiple funders; ensure timely and accurate financial submissions.Strategic and AdministrativeSupport finance committee meetings with agendas, minutes, and documents.Manage organizational insurance policies (workers’ comp, liability, D&O, etc.).Design and optimize financial management tools and policies to mitigate risk and enhance reporting accuracy.Qualifications7+ years of experience in nonprofit financial management.BS/BA in accounting or related field; CPA not required.Experience with large-scale financial projects (system implementations, audits, multi-entity compliance).Experience managing financial operations for dual-entity nonprofits preferred.Experience with nonprofits focusing on politics, advocacy, or democracy reform is a plus.Technical knowledge and skillsKnowledge of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) compliance, Form 990, lobbying expenditure tracking, and political activity limits.Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel; budgeting and grant management experience.Ability to develop and implement financial management plans, budgets, and compliance frameworks.Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to present complex financial concepts to diverse audiences.Ability to translate financial data into actionable insights.Management and professional skillsDetail-oriented financial process management and vendor oversight.Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate when needed.Strong organizational and regulatory compliance capabilities.Decision makingThe Finance Director works with the COO to approve budgets and finance documents for the board; the COO may review payroll and budgeting functions for compliance.Structure and travelThis is a full-time, salaried, remote position requiring 40 hours per week, with regular travel to Washington, D.C.
