As the university’s largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education, with graduate students working alongside world-renowned faculty on foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries.The Communication Department is home to leading scholars studying political communication, focusing on how communication and media affect political attitudes and behaviors, and on the workings of political institutions. The area is known for research methods innovation and scientific inference.Position SummaryThe Department of Communication is seeking a Physicist: Research Scientist. The position involves an interdisciplinary study of observer effects as it relates to the quantum measurement problem. The study will comprehensively assess observer effects in wave function collapse, and uniquely include psychological perspectives and methods in research design. The primary investigator will be a psychologist, and the study will be conducted within the Institute for Research in Social Sciences at Stanford University.ResponsibilitiesApply strong experimental methods to execute the Tonomura double slit design (using a BBO crystal) and the Mach-Zehnder interferometer design; a background in the quantum measurement problem is desirable.Conduct a comprehensive literature review—theoretical and experimental—on variables influencing wave function collapse and develop a plan for replicating or testing a wide range of them.Develop and apply methods for assessing and controlling variables related to observation, drawing on ideas from psychology and quantum physics.Analyze data and publish results in peer‑reviewed outlets.Dedicate 80% of time to the research project; the remaining 20% may be devoted to other research interests and opportunities at Stanford.This is a 100% FTE, 1 year fixed‑term position with the possibility of renewal, onsite with potential telecommuting (hybrid) depending on operational need.QualificationsPhD in empirical physics is preferred.A successful candidate will have a PhD in empirical physics, experience collecting data in laboratory settings, experience analyzing empirical data, experience reviewing published literature in physics, and experience writing manuscripts and guiding papers through the revision/publication pensation and Employment DetailsOn-site position open to candidates anywhere in the United States.Five Regional Pay Structures exist; compensation will be based on location.Estimated pay range: $70,000 to $99,000 per annum.Pay ranges reflect good faith estimates; actual offers consider scope, responsibilities, qualifications, budget, internal equity, location, and market pay.Base pay is part of a comprehensive rewards package; benefits information is available through Stanford resources.Why Stanford is for YouFreedom to grow: career development programs, tuition reimbursement, or course audits; opportunities to attend talks and events.A caring culture: strong retirement plans, generous time off, and family care resources.A healthier you: health and fitness options and comprehensive health benefits.Discovery and fun: access to historic sculptures, trails, and museums.Enviable resources: commuter programs, incentives, discounts, and more.Legal and Diversity InformationThe job duties listed are typical for this classification and are not intended to be a comprehensive inventory of all duties.
