OverviewPhysicist: Research Scientist Position (Onsite Opportunity) at Stanford University, School of Humanities and Sciences, Stanford, California, United States.Position: Physicist: Research Scientist. This is a 100% FTE, 1 year fixed-term position with possibility of renewal. The position is based on the Stanford campus with potential for a hybrid on-site/off-site arrangement subject to operational need.ResponsibilitiesLead an interdisciplinary study of observer effects as it relates to the quantum measurement problem. Conduct a comprehensive assessment of observer effects in wave function collapse, including psychological perspectives and methods in research design.Perform literature review (theoretical and experimental) on variables influencing wave function collapse; develop plans for replicating or testing a wide range of variables; develop and apply methods for assessing and controlling variables related to observation, drawing on psychology as well as quantum physics.Analyze data and publish results in peer-reviewed outlets.Allocate approximately 80% effort to the research project and up to 20% to other research interests and opportunities at Stanford.QualificationsPhD in empirical physics preferred; experience collecting data in laboratory settings; experience analyzing empirical data; experience reviewing published literature in physics and writing manuscripts; ability to carry papers through revision and publication.Strong background in experimental methods; familiarity with the Tonomura double-slit design (using a BBO crystal) and Mach-Zehnder interferometer design; strong background in the quantum measurement problem is desirable.Position DetailsLocation: Stanford campus; on-site with potential telecommuting/hybrid option; subject to operational need.Time allocation: 80% on primary research project; 20% on other tasks/opportunities at Stanford.Pay range: $70,000 to $99,000 per annum; pay determined by location and other factors; Stanford pay ranges and benefits information available through Cardinal at Work.Schedule: Full-time; Employee Status: Fixed-Term; Job Code: 6280; Requisition ID: 106065; Grade: R99BenefitsStanford benefits and rewards as described via Cardinal at Work; inclusive and comprehensive rewards package; specifics discussed during hiring process.Equal OpportunityStanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer.
