ResponsibilitiesThe Payments Compliance Counsel for the Americas interprets federal and state money transmission laws and provides advice to the Lines of Business to ensure payments regulatory compliance in the U.S., Canada and LATAM. The role partners with Payments Commercial Legal to review and negotiate payments-related agreements with third-party payment service providers and banks, and assists product counsel with payments subject matter expertise. The candidate should have a strong understanding of payments regulatory compliance within the fintech industry, particularly in the creator economy, and collaborate with cross-functional teams (legal, compliance, and business partners) to drive operational excellence and strategic goals.The ideal candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, cross-timezone environment and navigate laws across various jurisdictions in the Americas. They will take ownership of proposed solutions and make sound judgments, enabling systematic and impactful changes at TikTok.Key responsibilities include:Understand and advise on money transmission and stored value laws and payment network rules; collaborate with compliance, product, legal, and operations to interpret and apply these laws.Assist product counsels by providing payments and financial services subject-matter expertise on new products/features.Manage cross-department projects spanning the Americas.Convey complex risk, legal, and regulatory concepts to internal and external stakeholders.Build strong working relationships with business leaders to support a culture of payments compliance.Review and negotiate agreements with third-party payment service providers, financial services companies, and banks.Support additional projects and ad-hoc work for E-Commerce, LIVE, Global Payments, and Global Legal Compliance teams.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:Deep understanding of payments regulatory compliance laws; ability to interpret and apply legal concepts in ambiguous situations.Proven ability to lead complex legal matters with autonomy and responsibility.Strong grasp of business and legal implications with risk awareness.Preferred Qualifications:Experience with payment product compliance advisory and review, including consumer financial services risks and regulations.Experience with US and Canadian money transmission, remittance, stored value, prepaid access laws, and payment network rules.Ability to translate regulations into clear communications.Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills; ability to engage with leadership, external partners, and regulators.Proactive, pragmatic self-starter with strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to manage heavy workloads.Experience reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements with payment and financial service providers.Global or regional experience in fintech startup or creator economy environments.About TikTokTikTok is the leading destination for short-form mobile video. Compensation may vary by location, qualifications, and experience. Base pay may be supplemented by bonuses, incentives, and restricted stock units. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, parental leave, disability coverage, life insurance, wellbeing benefits, and paid holidays, sick days, and personal time.
