OverviewSenior Development Accountant: GHJ Search and Staffing provides qualified Accounting and Finance professionals on a temporary and permanent basis across a broad range of industries. We work with a mission-driven real estate development organization seeking a Senior Development Accountant to support the financial operations of new construction, acquisition / rehab, and complex development projects. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this role will focus on projects in active development, handling everything from predevelopment through construction close-out, reorgs, and refinancings. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with project accounting, strong working knowledge of construction financing, and comfort with GAAP. This is a collaborative, high-impact accounting team that partners closely with development and construction stakeholders.Key ResponsibilitiesPrepare timely, GAAP-compliant financial statements and journal entriesPerform detailed reconciliations for: prepaids, accruals, and debt / interest; fixed asset capitalization; project funding draws and cash receipts; insurance claims, pay apps, reserves, and intercompany transfersReview and approve AP entries; prepare internal wire and funding approvalsEnsure accurate classification of construction and development transactionsLead monthly construction draws (internal and external sources)Set up draw budgets and mapping in collaboration with Project ManagersRecord and reconcile general contractor activity and retention accrualsMaintain accurate tracking for capital contributions and equity paymentsPrepare year-end audit workbooks and financial packagesSupport cost audits for projects at completionRespond to auditor requests and manage documentation under manager guidanceSupport senior management and board reporting on: construction progress, intercompany lending, and placed-in-service milestones; predevelopment draw summaries and capital analysisContribute to ad hoc financial reporting for external partners and fundersWhat You'll Bring5+ years of project accounting or real estate / construction accounting experienceStrong understanding of GAAP; affordable housing or nonprofit experience a plusExcel proficiency (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, reconciliations)Proactive mindset and ability to thrive in a deadline-driven, team environmentExcellent attention to detail and strong communication skillsAffordable housing and / or HUD accounting experience is a huge plus95,000 - $115,000 a yearThis is a meaningful opportunity to work at the intersection of finance and impact, helping deliver affordable and sustainable housing in communities that need it most.
