Agency: Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Duties And Responsibilities This position serves as a Troop Legal Advisor to a Troop within the Florida Highway Patrol and Assistant General Counsel to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. This position provides legal advice and training to FHP members. An ideal candidate will possess criminal litigation experience as a prosecutor, be comfortable in a courtroom setting, and be able to think on their feet. A Troop Legal Advisor (TLA) handles a variety of matters, including prosecution of traffic infraction hearings, civil asset forfeitures, monitor claims litigation, and other administrative hearings as needed. The ability to communicate effectively with non-lawyers is very important. The role includes a training aspect, therefore, self-motivation and regular communication with members of the Office of the General Counsel by video conference and frequent meetings are expected. Overnight travel is required. The candidate will develop solid working relationships with law enforcement personnel at all levels of the agency, local state attorneys, sheriffs, and other local police agencies. This position may involve reviewing warrants for probable cause, facilitating legal aspects of court-ordered evidence destruction, and answering questions on a wide range of legal topics. Preferred Qualifications At least two (2) years of experience as an Assistant State Attorney or Public Defender Supervisory experience of other attorneys Experience creating and delivering legal training Prior law enforcement experience Job Related Requirements Selected candidate must be an active member of The Florida Bar in good standing. Day and overnight travel are required. A valid driver’s license is required. The position is subject to a Level 2 background along with CJIS security clearance, to include fingerprinting as a condition of employment pursuant to Chapter 110.1127, 435 and 943, Florida Statutes.
