Assistant General Counsel - Employment Law Unit | NYC Department of Health and Mental HygieneOverviewThe Employment Law Unit (ELU) is a vital program within the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) at the NYC Health Department. It has jurisdiction over agency employees to investigate and prosecute matters relating to employee misconduct and fitness for duty.ResponsibilitiesAssist the Employment Law unit in all phases of the disciplinary process, including investigations, preparation of disciplinary charges, and prosecution from Informal Conference through the appeals process (including OATH and Civil Service Commission).Research and draft important and complex legal documents and opinions; support the legal office as needed.Work on Conflicts of Interest (COI) matters.Deliver agency-wide trainings to supervisory staff on progressive discipline and its relation to the administrative disciplinary process.Collaborate with the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel on legal matters received by OGC when necessary.Preferred SkillsExcellent written and verbal communication skills.Great attention to detail.Knowledge of Employment Law, including New York Civil Service Law, New York Conflicts of Interest Law and related disciplinary rules affecting NYC employees.Knowledge of administrative law.Litigation experience; strong organizational skills.Why You Should Work For UsLoan Forgiveness: Potential eligibility for federal/state loan forgiveness and repayment assistance programs.
