The Solicitor General is responsible for ensuring the excellence of the Attorney General's appellate practice. The Office of the Solicitor General serves as a clearinghouse for appeals handled by the Department of Justice; provides appellate advice to all divisions within the Department of Justice; prepares or oversees the preparation of briefs, petitions, and other papers filed in appellate courts, including the U.S. and California Supreme Courts; argues appeals in federal and state courts; and supports the improvement of appellate practice skills Department-wide. The Geoffrey Wright Fellow participates in and supports the work of the Office, working with other attorneys in the Office and the Department on a wide variety of civil, criminal, and public-rights matters, often under tight deadlines.
