Middle Markets Underwriter (Senior or AVP)Zurich is seeking a Market Facing Underwriter, Middle Market (Senior or AVP) for our Chicago office. This position is based in Chicago with a hybrid work arrangement. You will collaborate with your manager to set a flexible schedule to support you, our customers, and our brokers and agents. The role requires visibility in the marketplace to meet with agents and brokers, and involves working with national wholesalers to drive growth with a focus on profitability.Role focus: Middle Markets is a key business segment focused on attracting top customer advocates with a sales mindset, strong technical underwriting skills, and solution-focused problem solving. Industry focus includes (not limited to) General Industries, Manufacturing, and Real Estate. Zurich Middle Markets offers end-to-end solutions for customers, including international programs.This role will be filled at either the Middle Markets Underwriter (Senior or AVP). The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based on the selected applicant’s experience and the qualifications listed for this position.ResponsibilitiesServe as a customer industry advocate with a focus on improving the customer experience by understanding risk and offering the best end-to-end solution for insurance needs.Apply a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.Use risk insights, data, and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale.Identify gaps and align Zurich’s products and value proposition to provide contract certainty for customers.Demonstrate strong analytical skills and act as an innovative advisor.Underwrite, analyze, and generate new and renewal business.Maintain a market-facing presence and production within the growing Middle Markets division.Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating manual rules.Develop and maintain agency and broker relationships.Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments.Basic QualificationsSenior Middle Markets UnderwriterHigh School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of experience in underwriting or market facing areas, orHigh School Diploma or equivalent and 10+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support, orZurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years in underwriting or market facing areas, orZurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years in claims or underwriting support, andKnowledge of Microsoft Office; experience meeting time constraints for quotes on new/renewal business; experience working in a team environment.AVP, Middle Markets UnderwriterHigh School Diploma or equivalent and 7+ years of experience in underwriting or market facing areas, orHigh School Diploma or equivalent and 14+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support, orZurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5+ years in underwriting or market facing areas, orZurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12+ years in claims or underwriting support, andExperience with Microsoft Office.Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s DegreeMarket facing, Property & Casualty underwriting experience3+ years of underwriting experience in Middle Market or largerAbility to effectively assess risk, strong negotiation and relationship-building skillsExcellent oral and written communication; understanding of underwriting philosophy, techniques, and regulationsCPCU and ARM a plusCompensation and benefits: The combined salary range for this position is $108,200.00 – $234,300.00.
