OverviewPostdoc Employee - Plant Transformation and Developmental Biology - Plant & Microbial Biology. The Plant & Microbial Biology Department at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Blackman Lab, in the area of plant transformation and developmental biology.Position DetailsSalary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. A reasonable estimate for this position is $69,073-$77,030.Percent time: 100%Anticipated start: Late 2025 - Early 2026Position duration: 2 years with the possibility of extension based on performance and fundingApplication window opens September 11, 2025; next review date September 25, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time); final date October 15, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time).Position DescriptionThe postdoctoral scholar will contribute to NSF-funded work in the lab aiming to define gene regulatory programs that inhibit transformation and regeneration in sunflower. The role includes comparative experimental approaches to assess regeneration-promoting treatments and gene expression patterns in sunflower and related species to inform reagent design and delivery strategies for transformation and gene editing in sunflower.ResponsibilitiesThe postdoc will work closely with the PI, Ben Williams (UC Berkeley), Ryan Nasti (USDA-ARS), collaborators, and lab personnel to design and lead research on the development and evolution of recalcitrance to transformation in Helianthus annuus. Responsibilities also include preparing grant proposals and manuscripts, data management and dissemination, organizing workshops with land managers, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. The ideal candidate will integrate across biological disciplines, troubleshoot new methodologies independently, and develop and pursue novel questions.QualificationsBasic qualifications (required at time of application): PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD program (or equivalent international degree).Additional qualifications (required at start): PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by start date.
