The Departmental Overview, Facilities Services, works to improve the campus in partnership with all members of the University community to ensure classrooms, laboratories, and offices support teaching, learning and research. Facilities Services includes asset management, custodial, maintenance operations, engineering and technical services, environmental services, grounds operations and the Cal Zero Waste program.Position SummaryInvolves inspections of campus construction projects for conformance to project plans and specifications, applicable codes and standards, policies and procedures; quality control and assurance.ResponsibilitiesInspections are conducted at regular intervals throughout the project lifecycle to confirm compliance with applicable codes, industry standards, campus design standards, and expected quality.Provide expert inspection of buildings and related components; review and inspect all campus infrastructure connections to those buildings, including utilities (high/medium pressure gas lines, steam lines, water mains, sanitary and storm drains, duct banks, high voltage distribution, and data networks including fiber).Coordinate with the campus utility engineering group to review deviations from approved construction documents in the construction and installation of campus utility infrastructure and systems.Verify that systems have been accepted prior to covering by installing contractors.Review and inspect building exterior access projects for compliance with ADA, state and local requirements; work with the campus Access Compliance Officer as applicable.Identify barriers to access in existing facilities and inspect construction projects for disabled access compliance to ensure correct quantity and compliance with applicable requirements and construction documents.Provide Inspector of Record (IOR) services on small and complex general construction projects, coordinating activities of other campus inspectors and special inspectors as required by California code of Regulations Title 24.Review special inspection reports for conformance with project specifications and refer discrepancies to the project team and Campus Building Official for resolution.Observe and witness acceptance testing procedures where required by codes and spect and confirm compliance with applicable codes, plans and specifications, and campus standards; act as deputy to the Director of Inspection Services and Campus Building Official.Provide guidance to internal and external partners regarding code compliance paths and implications for project design and delivery; provide input on proposed variances and alternate means of construction.Coordinate and support inspections with State/Campus Fire Marshal; when possible coordinate inspection timeframes to minimize disruption to occupied spaces.Enter inspection results into appropriate university systems for project tracking; provide daily/weekly reports as required.Provide plan review for civil plans and specs for campus projects; discuss findings with designers as required.Collaborate with university engineering partners on civil reviews to ensure compliance with campus design standards and engineering practice.Required QualificationsExpert knowledge of California Building Codes, Cal/OSHA, and the Campus Construction Design Standards.Expert knowledge in providing comprehensive plan review services for complex improvement projects and code applications for replacements, repairs and upgrades of campus facilities.Expert ability to review and advise project management on project completeness for progress payments.Expert verbal and interpersonal communications skills; ability to work with a variety of constituents.Expert organizational and analytical skills; problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution.Expert skills in meeting budget and time constraints; ability to use computers to document inspections, project progress, and related activities.Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.Certification in a specialty inspection discipline or disciplines.Certification in a specialty skilled trade.Preferred QualificationsICC Commercial Combination Inspector (C5) or California Commercial Combination Inspector (I5).Salary & BenefitsFor information on the comprehensive benefits package, visit the University of California’s Compensation & Benefits website. The budgeted annual salary range is $112,400.00 - $145,000.00.
